Got it, thanks. Usually links get automatically colorized, so I didn't think it was a link. Maybe around $600 this might be of interest, but without a major media push, I doubt it'll get much notice.

"The company touts its noise reduction, and the ability to upscale non-hi-res streaming sources to better quality sound"
Really?

At least the SONY has a liquor flask form factor. The PONO's "wheel chock" or "Toblerone" form is a #fail going in. I'll bet on it.

You guys should check out Tidal. It's an audiophile grade version of spotify or Rdio. Dunno. I think Pono is bullshit as it's my (limited) understanding that there is no greater resolution than the master recording. Why not develop a 24bit ,wav player and call it a day?
Also, while I don't claim to have any form of "golden ears" I have passed a blind shootout comparing summing mixers and would not like my chances picking out the 328kb MP3 over a Master. This is not to say I send MP3s as masters because a scientifically higher resolution is available but I am saying if I had to prove it with my ears I could not.

So, he opened the store....it's 90% CD resolution files....I had intended to buy the whole Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt catalogs--assuming they, being his buddies, would've saved their high rez stuff to be exclusive to Pono.
Nope. Even Bonnie's last 24/88 is a Redbook in the pono store....and all the ones Jackson had briefly on HDTracks but were pulled? CDs. So, I literally own more 96khz Jackson Browne than you can get in the new "high rez" Pono store. Terribly weird.

That's actually all Pono IS....but, then....of course there's no greater resolution than the master. But, whether it's a 24/96 master or 24/48 or analog 1/2"....it's more than CD can reproduce. Since mp3 is created from the already dumbed down CD....

Well kids, the MP3 isn't going anywhere. It's the digital equivalent of the cassette tape. Cheap, small, fast and affordable for the masses. And you know something? I grew up listening to all my music on cassettes - I'm from "that" generation - and loved the softer sound of a cassette versus a CD for extended play with headphones. Less ear fatigue.
So as much as I applaud Sony for making something truly upscale that brings audiofile quality to the middle classes, I don't see this getting widespread consumer acceptance, not even from us gearheads.
