I've got 4 of the 1224's, with the PCIe-424 card.
Will the BLA mod make a significant improvement?
I've read info from both camps, and wonder if the mods they do only come across as wonderful is only because of how bad the devices were to begin with?!
The only reason I have 32 channels of I/O is to be able to do analog summing.... but not sure that is even worth it.
Maybe I should just get something like a Metric Halo ULN-2 instead?
Thoughts?!

yes I had the blapollo done; certainly pleased, its kind of personal through in terms of cost do you want to spend on the mod or something else ?
as the Apollo has the onboard dsp for UA plugs I felt the investment in the bla mod made sense..

The only reason I had acquired so many channels of I/O was for analog summing, but it seemed that was not a significant improvement.
So I sold my summing mixer, and decided I should focus on the 2bus, but am having second thoughts.
What if the reason analog summing did not impress me was because of the 1224 converters??!'
If that is the case, should I spend over $1000 to get BLA mods, and wait a while to get them done?
Or possibly consider having the guys at Revive Audio do the mods? They have confirmed they do mods on the analog paths, similar to BLA. Anyone heard their modded devices?

What summing mixer did you use(i'm predicting dangerous)? The BLA 002 sig mod with FM clock i had done was stunning, conversion matters much more than people give it credit for, but it's also not just the converter chips, count the sum of many things in the analog path, op amps, capacitor choices, power supply quality and headroom, clock accuracy/jitter. I found that my rig sounded increasingly better with track count for some reason, it gave depth, focus and solidity in lieu of the stock flaccid greyworld sonics ime. The sound quality improvement inspired me to write more in tracking, and break out tunes i had put away in frustration. I think it was worth every penny i spent on it, i'd do it again, and i'd recommend it to anyone. I'd also add that i demo'd quite a few expensive units and didn't prefer any over it. hope this helps a little.

I had BLA do their complete mod package on a Behringer ADA 8200 . It seems quite acceptable for an extra eight channels of ADAT to analog DAC.

I had BLA do their Signature Mod on an 003R I had and loved it. Not sure how much difference the 1224 mod would be as it involves less work. If you decide to go the mod route though I'd think about grabbing their Microclock on the bundle deal also.
I've since replaced the 003R with an RME UFX which I haven't felt inclined to mod at all.

Speaking of a BLA Micro Clock, I have been wondering how much that (or another good clock) could improve things?
The PCIe-424 manual indicates that an external clock is not needed -- I suppose that is because their is a clock on the card already?
Since the 1224's only do 44.1 and 48, is the older Aardvark sync clock (does only 44.1 and 48, with some odd slight variances just below, inbetween, and just above) any good?

I am not familiar with MOTU's clocking architecture but I had a microclock for a season and used it to tie together several pieces. There was a very perceptible difference with blind testing. I had a chance to speak with Matt who designed it sometime back at their old shop. He pretty much lost me about 5 minutes into the conversation but he has developed some fascinating techniques, their jitter is like 1 pico second.
