Well you will be happy! the VP28 is not bright! it is vintage fat from my 3 minutes with it so far.

I've got a few vp28's, and gar2520's, 1731's, red dots. The 1731's are smoother on the edges than the other 2 in my experience. That being said, if i could only choose one opamp, it would be the red dots, thank god that isn't the case, cause the gars kill also! lol!

1731's have more high/mid-highs to my ears. I'd be more inclined to test the GAR 2520's in it before I put the 1731's in it, esp if you are going to get some GAR 2520's anyway. Those red dot's do have some sizzle in the top. I only have red dot's in the 28's. It's not an issue in those. Might be a different story in the 312s I guess.

I have all red dots...but I've heard the GAR's are a little brighter. That true jsteiger and littlesicily?

I have 4 VC528's from jeff. two of 'em have gar 2520s and 2 of 'em have 1731s. the 1731s are definitely darker sounding. they're just generally creamier to my ears. I guess from a scientific standpoint, that would mean the transistors (and overall design) don't respond as quickly as they do in the 2520s so transients are smoothed out a bit?

Pardon my ignorance, but you can just pop these in, can't you?

If you built the units with the sockets on the PCBs instead of soldering the amps right to the board, then yes.

So what is the consensus? Are the 1731's brighter than the Red Dots? I've heard that they're brighter and I've heard the opposite...

Technically yes, that is a possibility. The 2520 wasn't known for it's speed either though. I remember reading that they had a slew in the 3-6V/us range. Slower than an NE5532. There could be all kinds of factors in why they sound different, harmonic content, frequency response, distortion over frequency, slew rate, drive strength, how they react with the output transformer, etc.

So what is the consensus? Are the 1731's brighter than the Red Dots? I've heard that they're brighter and I've heard the opposite... I remember them being "different". I think this is truly one of those times where you might just have to try them for yourself. I try not to describe audio from different electronics because so many environmental, physiological and electrical things can have an effect on the sound.

John, it's time to break out the Soldering Iron and build up a pair. they're only $18-ish from jeff each!! it'll take ya about an hour or less to build one up. chunger has awesome photo documentation of the build over on GroupDIY. I think it's the Newbie Builds VP312DI thread, or maybe the VP26 thread.

I tried the 1731's in place of the red dots in both the VP28's and the Heider. I preferred the Red Dots in both by a good bit. I thought the 1731's were smiley faced and brighter than the RD's. RD's had more bottom and more mids. I would go so far as to say that they don't just sound different, they sound better.

Obviously, that was a subjective comment. Since they are brighter, I could see liking them more on electric guitars or something. I just personally liked them better on everything I tried them on. YMMV

With the right mic choice, i find by switching between all 3 of these gar 2520's, 1731's and the red dots, i can just opt for the eq curve i want. I get a lesser quality end result when i turn an eq in post, or use one in line while tracking, than taking the 2 minutes to change an opamp on the front side. jmo

Wonder if there are any opamps out there that could dramatically change the sound to be darker?

I think I should be able to take the VF600 op amp out of my Brute and just pop it into one of the capi's, right? Or maybe the red dot into the brute. Oooo. Fun times!

If the VF600 op amp is an API 2520 foot print and runs on 16V, then it'll be fine! let us know the results if you do it. And also if you blow up that op amp :-P
