Hey, remember the adam thread ? my local dealer has a very good deal on some unopened a77x's, I have a7x's so am thinking about it. But if you were looking at around $1750 usd, what would you recommend ? I do like the adam tweater system and like what I read about the design improvement of the 77 vs the 7's. From SOS review: "The A77X isn't simply an A7X on its side with an additional driver; it's essentially a three‑way A7X on its side. In an A7X, the single crossover frequency is 2.5kHz, but in the A77X the frequencies are 400Hz and 3kHz, making it a genuine three‑way loudspeaker. I am a huge fan of good active three‑way loudspeakers (I still go all dewy‑eyed over the long‑gone Genelec 1024's). Why? Simply because, to my ears, a well‑designed three‑way system just sounds better than any two‑way equivalent. There are real physical and electronic reasons backing up my ears, the main one being that in a three‑way system the crossover frequencies are moved out of the mid‑range area where human hearing is at its most sensitive, thus allowing the use of a single driver across this frequency band. This removes any phase shifts (and other crossover anomalies) from the mid-range, giving a more accurate reproduction of this critical area.” Talk amongst ourselves

I haven't heard the 77's, but they certainly look the part You might be able to score some used Focal Solo's for around $1900. Not sure how they compare, though.

Shameless plug for Unity Audio Rock monitors, which also have a ribbon tweeter. I'll let mine go for $1600 w/shipping included. If you don't like em, you can send them back to me. They're in the classifieds, or PM me for more details.

If you like the smaller Adams you will love the bigger Adams. Their take on a ribbon isn't my favorite, and to me it just won't blend with the rest of the system. The price point your at is tough you get resolution, but it's limited, do you want low end? Or is it a taste of what the midrange really sounds like? Monitors are like shoes what fits me won't fit you and you can only know what fits by trying them. Always remember this you do not listen to speakers, you listen through them. YOU have to learn what they do right and what they do wrong. That was the thing with NS10s they sucked , they lied to you as much if not more than they told you the truth, but because they were cheap if you knew the pair in Studio A anywhere you knew them in your bedroom .

I have the Adam A7X, and my mixes haven't been translating well. I'm looking around now. I love the Focal Solo6 Be, but it's out of my price range and is light in the low end anyway. I tried the Presonus Scepter 8's last weekend and liked them a little more than the A7X's, but I still preferred the Solo6 in general. I still might do a sidegrade for the Presonus' because they're low end is strong and deep.
You might want to look at the Scepter 8's before you buy.

It's not a true 3 way. Read the description again..
Technically is a hybrid MTM setup but one woofer just has a lower low pass point. Both woofers still produce sound below 400hz.
It's generally very hard run such a large driver up to 3khz without some serious issues. They probably addressed those with more filters ,which make group delay issues prevalent.
The tweeters are notorious for beaming, so position is super critical.
All in all, ultimately you're going to have to decide, so see if you can return them If you don't like them.

Thx everyone, i do like the a7x's but would prefer the low mids and bass to be clearer which the a77x's should achieve. as they are new they have a 5 year warrenty and could be returned Big jump in cost though: l looked around extensively b4 buying the a7x's: lots to think about

When i auditioned my adams I listen to genelec, dynaudio, focal, neumann etc and t the time really appreciated how the adam hi end allowe one the hear into that spectrum. Now, i think there is a lot more going on in the broad mid range so resolution there is more helpful as you said for our mixing not just listening enjoyment purposes. I friend suggested I revisit the focal 6's and mentioned event opal's, a little out of my price point but the design sounds superb !

kcatthedog, are you open to passives? Do you already own an amp? You might consider the Amphion One15's in this price range. You can get them in your space to audition. I've got the One18's. I used to work on ATC's, Questeds, and Spiral Grooves. I don't want to sound like a hype machine, but they're worth some attention.

Yes but unfortunately I don't have an amp but I was reading about them, my room is 20 x 10 what kind of power would be warranted to do the 15's justice ?

I ended up with the Amphion100 amp, but used them with my Emotiva for a bit. The Emotiva is a great bang for the buck amp.
