Just playing around with the Steven Slate VBC Vari Mu plug on the 2 bus. Really, really digging the width I can create with the compressor controlling the mid and side. I have no doubt that this is one of those things that can really get you into trouble - e.g., it sounds fantastic at the end of a two hour mixing session, then you go to the car and it sounds like you're in Shea Stadium. For the tracks I build here at home and "master" myself, Are you guys using mid/side compression or just leaving well enough alone?

I use the mid-side on the Slate Mu most of the time, but I only use the Mu occasionally. Most of the time it's just kills the low end, and the tone becomes brittle and edgy, but once in a while, it saves a mix, so I always give it a try to see.
I almost always use some Grey and Red though..

Yeah - I noticed the same thing...robbed the low end.

You might want to demo some of the UA plugs: Precision K comes to mind : very versatile and can be used subtly or dramatically !
I like using it on elements in the mix too !

I was thinking the UAD Fairchild had this feature, but it was only the LAT/VERT. Seems like on of the FC plugs has mid/side.

I demo'd the Precision K a couple of times, but didn't think it was better than the Stereo Spread on the Vitalizer. Maybe I should try again.

I think I must've had some switch in the wrong position. Reading the directions (imagine that) the FC is indeed has the ability to control mid/side. Gonna try that. While the Fairchild sounds really good, it is definitely cleaner than other offerings. It reacts like a really clean Sta-Level imho. The rare opportunities I've been around the real thing, it sounded the same way. Massive amounts of gain reduction without massive coloring. Kind've weird - with the Waves Puigchild and old UAD FC, you could really crank the input and threshhold and get a ton of room sound out of something like the drum bus. Not the same with the new UAD plug. Seems more smacky. Might be really great for 2 bus mid/side control, though.
