Self proclaimed equivalent just got way more affordable, by more than a third off the price, $749 with free shipping. I believe the MF65(the mic that won the $60,000 ribbon mic shootout at recording hacks, it cost $2,400+). I have a pair of lesser samar modded mics that sound so good, i honestly cant believe it, if i had the $ right now, it'd be a done deal. www.samaraudiodesign.com/Products.html

The Samar site is a little confusing specifying differences between the 37 and 39 or if they're both still available.

Reach out to Mark (Fouxman) via the site contact info...don't be deterred by the site's flaws...the microphones are absolutely amazing!...Mark may well be the best in the world for ribbon-mic design...his custom-wound toroidal trannies alone are outstanding... Pulled out my Samar-modded Cascade Victor today after reading this thread...absolutely stunning sound!...velvety ribbon goodness with the hint of LDC condenser-quality "air"...crazy good!...if you can't afford his Samar offerings, for about $350-400 he will transform a $100 Chinese ribbon-mic into a world-class performer... ( I invited Mark to join the conversation )

Microphone Parts just came out with a mod kit for the cascade fatheads. It replaces the motor/ribbon and transformer with Samar parts: "Our FHX ribbon motor and toroidal transformer were designed and are manufactured in the US by Samar Audio Design, recognized experts in ribbon microphone technology." microphone-parts.com/mod-kits/fathead-mods/Price is $389 ..... which is above my personal 'instant purchase' threshold, but very curious about this.

Wow! cool, It's a toroidal tranny and a ribbon motor machined and ribbon installed by samar, that kit is sure to be killer! if you have one of those stock micss, it's a no brainer imo.

Yeah if I had a fathead I would have probably already pulled the trigger. I think Warren/zenpro is still doing the basic version for $99.

Carl Marinoff 818-398-4073 carl@samaraudiodesign.com From what I understood, the 37, 39 & 65 all have basically the same components (ribbon element & transformer) but are constructed differently. We'll wait for a better explanation for the exact difference, specially between the 39 & 37.

...I reached out to Mark at Samar...he's been crazy busy and said he would have his associate Carl (as aremos also posted above) chime in to answer any questions... ...here's Mark's response in terms of the site's current state of confusion: "Yes, we are working on it to make less confusing and I will ask Carl (my sales director) to get on board and answer the questions. In the meantime, if people would like to get more info they can call him at 818-398-4073, or email carl@samaraudiodesign.com"

Hey Dennis & folks, Carl just emailed me the following:
"The VL37 is derived from and has the same sonic performance of the MF65. Both mics are completely handmade with components made entirely in our US shop. They use the same toroidal transformer and motors with neodymium magnets custom made to our specifications. Their differences are mostly physical and having to do with the construction, isolation mounting and internal pop-filtering. The VL37 was designed to be more practical for stereo applications and to be more affordable. It uses a smaller diameter, lightweight powder coated body with a removable isolation clip to replace the more costly integrated shock and swivel mounting parts found on the MF65 and AL39."
