I don't think I've ever seen a real Compex, let alone taken it for a drive. Has anybody here used both a real Compex and the Boz Bendeth plug?
I know the Compex was used on the Levee Breaks drums. Are there other applications it excels at/ what are your favourite uses for the Compex.
Cheers, Geoff

Yeah - seems like he or unit7 has one... I would doubt it gets you all the way there, though... But hey, great price!

Recently, there was a Demo Deal Compex at Vintage King. Almost did it. However, the SOS review scared me off: unbalanced I/Os, a need to have the thing calibrated periodically, controls are fiddly and "good" results are sometimes not simple to achieve. Of course, I've never used one, so there it is.
I decided to spend more time on the obvious: channel the spirit of John Henry Bonham and infuse him in my drummer, or, at a minimum, put him to work as an editor of my midi drum parts! (I know, a contradiction in terms). And always study the phenomenon that he was.

Some years ago, I was passed a bootleg cassette recording of a Led Zeppelin rehearsal, the band playing in a room. Mono cassette recorder, but when Bonham started playing by himself, just into that cassette recorder, it already sounded like Led Zeppelin. No gear needed. No JPJ or Jimmy Page, either. Just Bonham in a room, you knew it was Zep.

yep, bench mark tunes are fool in the rain, achilles last stand, and the song remains the same, if you ever hear a drummer that comes even close to the vibe JHB puts out on those, nab him up because even close is amazing, thats how great that guy was....god lovem.
btw, i've never heard anyone come close, and i've looked....hard, page and plant with mike lee(rip) tried achilles, mikes was a great drummer, but it wasn't even close. JB was a bus driving mofo! 6:45 fill just slays me!

June 21st, 1977. JHB is a giant astride Planet Earth: JMO, anyone who appreciates pure elevation in musical performance owes it to themselves to listen to at least the beginning of this, this is my all time favorite version of SRTS! i first discovered it in the promo section of the desert dvd, it's the tightest and most powerfully connected i've ever heard 3 musicians play together, ever! And JHB, in this single performance, chops off all heads that rear doubt toward whom the King actually is, and always will be, he's just F-ing ridiculous!!! I liken the sound to Einstein going P Funk Punk on the back of an agro King Kong! 8)

being a drummer for 30 years, a Dick Grove school of music alum, who built my own drumkit from 0, i can handle a lot thats out there as a player, i'd like to think i get somewhat close to JB's vibe when i try(understood i'm me, and you are who you are, and it should be no other way), but the sound, swing feel, nuance/power/explosiveness and musicality of Bonham is just astonishing, especially considering in 1977 he was the ripe old age of 27 years old! 19 when they launched! yup, i'm as big a fan as there is.
A lot of drummers believe honestly they can cop that feel/vibe, i say... get the tape machines running and give it a try, and don't feel bad as you listening back, and your tail tucks between your legs, you weren't the first, and you won't be the last lol 8)

Man Bonham huffed and puffed and grunted behing those drums. I may still have them somewhere. If I find them, I'll try and post them. Cheers, Geoff

Have you trued the new Compex plug in? We'd like to hear your thoughts on it, since you're experienced with the real deal.

So Håkan, what's the verdict drumrec? Downloaded the demo and, unfortunately, it does not suck on my drum tracks. Looks like I'll have to get this.

So Håkan, what's the verdict drumrec? Downloaded the demo and, unfortunately, it does not suck on my drum tracks. Looks like I'll have to get this. I do not think it was a bad plug and it works well in different situations. But I pass on this plug. Did not recognize so much from my F760. But that said, I have the old version of Compex with helios cards and it differs a lot from the compex available today. When it comes to pluggins I land mostly in UAD world. They got me to sell a hardware compressor and it was my stereo DBX 160 VU. When the UA released DBX 160 VU pluggins (100 years ago), they did it so well vs the hardware, so I sold my DBX 160 VU stereo unit. But it was the only pluggin that made me sell hardware /H

Thanks Håkan.Interesting comment about your DBX 160. I'm always on the lookout for the hardware, but if the UAD comes that close, I might have to think again.
BTW, for those interested in Boz' Compex, it's on sale now for $99.
