I would like to present you MA1 germanium mic/di preamp, that's a discrete class A preamp that I have designed and developed around 2 years ago basing on my experience as electronic engineer. MA1 is not a clone of another preamp but a new one. I have sold it by partial kit only on my sticked thread on white market of Group DIY forum. MA1 is a trasformer balanced mic/instrument preamp for 500 rack that provides the typical germanium sound but with also the high performances of a modern solid state silicon preamp. To achieve these features, MA1 uses both silicon transistors and an old type germanium transistor inside a new modern/old discrete topology. The germanium transistor is on the voltage amplifier stage, that is there it makes more "germanium sound" possible. Its sound is an 70 years era trasformers sound with the color of the best 60 years era germanium gears. I have given particular importance to obtaining a very low noise circuit since noise is the typical weak point of germanium preamps. MA1 has outstanding noise performances, so it outperforms many silicon transistors preamp in the market too. It has a max gain of 64dB on mic input. After many kits sold I would like to start to sell it also as assembled unit. On my hand I have 4 prototypes but just 2 ones are sold today before posting this message. My intention is selling it with the "built to order" formula, actually I have not a reseller. A preamp as it should be in 600 - 800 USD range. As promotional sale I can sell it at 390 USD each for the first units (!). It is not a new product since there are several units running in the world but it is the first time that I sell it as assembled one so it is new on the regular market. some photos. thanks best regards Pier Paolo

I have one of these. It's pretty cool. Slightly woolly, darker, but still full fidelity.
I found it has an interesting change in sound with different mics, more than you'd hear from other preamps.

I've got 4 of these pres. Two of which I've converted the D.I. into an output attenuator. They have that 70's sound, almost self compressed and tape like, something different than my other pres. They make a good addition the palette of colors.

I'm curious how this compares to the Chandler Germ 500. Has anyone had experience with both. To those that already own the APP what do you often use if for--vocals? kick? acoustic?

To those that already own the APP what do you often use if for--vocals? kick? acoustic? basing on who built the kit, MA1 is used for vocals, kicks, basses, electric guitars, acoustic guitars, overheads, and btw for instruments. The color is that of classic germanium sound. There are some sound engineers that use it pratically always and some other only for specific works.

Nice work Pier. what are the qualities cowboy? i always think dark when i think germanium, what mic and voice you picking when you're using it? any clips? very interested in these, thanx It's really smooth. Wouldn't call it dark, maybe darkish. I love the way it sounds. Ahh, I just thought of how to describe it, it makes this U47 sound a lot like my old 67 that I sold. I've got a new country tune that should be finished tomorrow that I'm tracking all the vocals with it. Between the CV4 and 47. I'll post it up in the working on section and link to it here when I'm finished tracking. Got some more guitar parts and steel to put on but I'm whipped tonight.

I think it's dark on some sources. Others it seems to scoop. It's interesting how it reacts differently to different input loads.

since a guy just asked me about the components I use inside on these units I am selling here of the MA1 germanium, I am writing my replay even here:
These MA1 germanium pres I am selling here has been built with high level components such as:
- CAPI input and output transformers - Fairchild and ONSemi (Motorola) semiconductors - Panasonic FM series electrolytic alunium capacitors for signal path (top level components for sound quality and elecrical performances) - Nichicon and Yageo electrolytic alunium capacitors for power rails (high temperature type, with voltage rating much higher than is needed, for high reliability). - Wima film capacitors (maybe the best company in the market for them) - C&K switches - audio grade Bourns platic film potentiometer for gain (very high level item) - custom anodized alumnium chassis - Neutrik gold plated jack plug for DI input
The low price does NOT mean low quality components but just a very good deal for who buy this preamp.

White Pages? regarding kit you can order it here, I am going to PM you. BTW I am going to post a thread on DIY section of this forum. regarding sound I can say that MA1 has the classic color of germanium sound. BTW I have designed MA1 for having it. thanks Pier Paolo
