I'm going to counter the negativety in the Albini thread with a thread intended to shine a light on what's being done right.
Here's my promise, and my hope for others:
I will not comment negtively on about any artist you post you're listening to....because, frankly what does ANYONE have to gain by that? Really.
So, I can do this pretty easily since I only keep things I bought this year on my iPhone. End of the year, I decide what gets added to the collection....and what goes bye bye....so, I'll just filter out the reissues....except two that I'm super excited about because they're not "usual suspects" and someone might benefit from knowin they're out there now--and filter the ones I'm leaning towards not making permanent.
Vinyl: (obviously its a digital version on the iPhone, but...I mention because the Slash CD is unlistenable, IMO--the vinyl sounds great)
-Martina McBride
-Sarah McLahclan
-Slash w/Conspirators
High Rez Digital:
-David Crosby
-Jackson Browne
-NAtalie Merchant
CD (or in one case AAC download):
-Jonatha Brooke
-Lake Street Dive
-Scott Bradlee and the Post Modern Jukebox
-You Plus Me
-Richie Kotzen Essential (ok....technically a collection, but much of it is rerecorded stripped down since he doesn't own the rights to the originals)
-JohnnySwim
-Kristina Train
-Counting Crows
-Adam Cohen
And then the reissues I mentioned--the Pages had all three of their late 70s (one in 81?) albums remastered and issues in Japan. I mention this because as a huge fan of Richard Page, I had literally never heard these--they've never been in print...and sold so little I never ran across the vinyl....I'm not crazy about the last one they did for Capitol in 81....but, the first two, are just....lots of "where the fuck have you been all my life"....lovely "prog pop"--I finally understood why he was tapped to replace Kevin Gilbert in Toy/Third Matinee in the 90s. I always thought "what an odd choice"--love that album, because I like him, but I have no idea he used to be SOOOO "progressive pop".
There have been countless high rez remasters of tape era usual suspects. They've gotten usually one listen. Some, which I won't name so as not to be negative, I didn't make it all the way through despite paying good money to hear the full resolution and new/final masters of....I AM an engineer after all....I can't NOT hear what's being done.
I post this, again, in the spirit of positivity. This is what's turned me on this year. I would encourage you to post your own. Check out mine. Check out someone whose taste align more to yours....let's see if we can make a thread about what turns us on without diminishing what turns someone else on. I've always said that if I post something about what I LIKE....someone else might get turned on by it too, good for that person and the artist I love....posting about how much you don't like something....really doesn't serve anyone....
so, there you go....what's spinning on my phone and stereo from 2014.
