Last Thursday, UAD and Gannon Kashiwa hosted a wonderful UAD demonstration at the lovely Studio D in Greenpoint Brooklyn. It was a cold rainy night, and Greenpoint is kind of the middle of nowhere, but it's really cool there, and it was great to see so many of the real hardware pieces some of our favorite plugs are modeled after sitting in the wall racks. There's a lot more to the Apollo system than I've uncovered, one surprise was there are ways to manipulate headphone mixes, not that I understand it all yet. There were two fantastic singer/songwriters performing through the Apollo Twin and an Octo satellite and the SSL board there. Gannon was so welcoming, and the entire event was fun and highly informative. They were demonstrating how the Unison technology works, and I absolutely LOVED the 1073 preamp with Unison technology I mentioned how frustrating it's been when instantiating a plug to have to look through the entire let of plugs trying to find the one you want, and Gannon was clearly aware of it, and I suspect UAD will fix this little annoyance at some point. I mentioned that it would be a real help to be able to put the plugins in a list, in any order we like, or at least highlight the ones we own and use. It's a small thing of course, but one I suspect bugs most of us a little. I'm excited about the Apollo system again, and can't wait to try the satellite with the Ocean Ways and a few plugs I've never used properly because I run out of DSP power. Now, all I need is to find a couple grand somewhere ;-)

I should mention they used an Anniversary Edition U87 mic, and it sounded great. I'd say a really good sounding room might have helped a lot, but they actually used all the UAD gear, and as far as I know, didn't run throughout the SSL preamps. After all the mic talk everywhere, it was a clear reminder that the U87 just basically works well on everything.

I agree that the list needs to be highlited or something for what you own already, highly annoying and the only major flaw I have seen with UAD. I'd like to test out the unison preamp models against my hardware and make a blind test out of it...need to do that soon.

Man, that would be really cool monkeyxx. I was just thinking I'd love to hear the UAD 1073 plug vs. the real thing.
Even if they're different, but close, that's the kind of sound I like.

Funny, I've searched high and low for a good mic. I ended up with an Oliver Archut, handmade UM17 Blueline with a Blackspade logo. After I put in the Thiersch M7 capsule, ( same as U87 I believe), it sounds excellent, but might not quite be the best fit for me. I might try the MK47 (U47 clone) eventually, but when I had my own home studio 20 years back, I used the U87 every day, and I gotta say, I was never once disappointed with the sound. It's the true workhorse people are often looking for.
The Unison technology must have really helped, because that 1073 plug just sounded great with the U87, I need a satellite, so I can relieve my Duo of some dsp usage, and get more plugs instantiated in the console.

I'm not surprised the demo used an Apollo Twin and an Octo Satellite. I've got a Twin Duo for my laptop, and you can't use a Unison pre and the Ocean Way plug simultaneously to track with, because of the way UAD allocates DSP resources. The Ocean Way is a hog.
I have no beef with the sound of the UAD hardware or software. The Twin is really quite slick for a portable laptop setup. It just needs more cowbell.

It would be really nice if satellites and all the Apollos could share the dsp for tracking.

It just needs more cowbell. I'm sure you probably realize that only you could make that line as funny as Walken. I appreciate your sense of humor.
