I can't believe I am actually going to have something to post on a mixing/headphones thread - like most folks, this has been like looking for the bigfoot lochness grail.
I can comfortably say I recommend the Audeze LCD-2.
These things are actually flat from 100hz down to 5hz. Flat, but firm.
They are not cheap - about a grand with tax -but they are without peer amongst the headphones I have tried. It is the first time I have done a mix exclusively on headphones and not been mortified when porting to other sources.
For the record, the other cans I have been through include: AKG 701, Grado 225, Grado 325, Sennheiser 280, ATH M50 (still use for tracking), Sony 7501 and was even using some itty bitty Phillips clip on earbuds (which I do still use for the final check). I have also purchased the new, less expensive Audeze offering (the EL-8) so I could do critical editing with a client listening, but while detailed, I did not find I could mix on these - just the Audeze LCD-2.
For the record, they do have offerings that are reportedly even more super duper, but based on the response curves I could find, those seem to swerve more into audiophile territory with some articulation in the high mids.

MJH how would you compare the grado 225 to the akg 701. i think im over my 701's. the low end just isnt translating for me and i dont have a sub to monitor through so im kinda dependent on phones in that region. i have a grado on the way... $1000 is out of the question for me too. i cant even afford half of one of those Audeze. bump on the Jim Williams headphone amp too.

Hi Porkyman,
I kept the Grado 225's and sold the 701's.
I had the Grados first, and did the usual research and graph reading and thought for sure the 701's were going to be the ticket. The AKG's were lovely for listening but I did not care for my mixing results. Now I understand those need a pretty serious burn in time - I did give them the minimum the suggested hours of burn, and maybe I just needed to live with them longer. However, I was having better translation with the Grado's and lost interest in forcing the issue.
I had been using the Grado's to check low end (I'm in the same no-sub camp) but found myself rolling off stuff higher and higher because I just didn't trust what I was or wasn't hearing - not exactly the ideal way to approach things. That's how ended up in Audeze land. Expensive, but like a lot of stuff, if I had found these in the first place, it would probably be a wash. Live and learn.

PS - I should note - the Audeze EL-8's are superior to the Grados ( I am able to listen to them side by side) but I do not still have the 701's for comparison. The EL8's are closer to $600.

What do you guys think about the sonarworks eq calibration. sonarworks.com/2015/02/sonarworks-reference-3-headphone-calibration-plug/I tried it out last night and it makes a pretty big difference. Not sure if its for the better though. It is interesting listening to the b&k curve. Interesting in the sense that my mixes sound like a muddy mess through it. I know a lot of studios tune their rooms to b&k type curves. Not flat. do you guys think a. headphone calibration is a good idea and b. Mixing to a b&k curve is a good idea. Bump on the JW headphone amp

I have an image file of the headphone schematic if anyone wants one. Rather than post it here for all the manufacturers to copy, send me an PM or email and I'll email a copy to you.

I have Shure 940`s and 840`s and Sony v6. All good. I like the shures better. The 840's are flatter but the 940's tell you what's going on with the low end better. Little tighter.
