Hey All,
Album of pics is here, but there are a few selected ones below. Total cost of the project including wood, screws, brackets, two premade racks, and rack rails was $225. I got some good deals, as always, by emailing forums@musiciansfriend.com for quotes on the racks and rails. I can't stress enough that when you're looking to buy something, you should email them first for a quote.
This thread finally motivated me to get in gear and get my rack situation sorted out.
I decided to use this rack as the basis for the build since I already had one in the studio. I tipped this over on its back and rotated 180 degrees to have an upward facing rack with an incline to the rear for the top portion of the rack.
Anyway, I went to Lowe's, grabbed a few 10' 2x4's, some screws, and a couple cans of spray paint to get started. I also order a second rack and 2 sets of 8U rack rails from Musician's Friend to get me in business.
I'm not a carpenter by any means. Really, I have no idea what I was doing, just quickly came up with a plan and got to work. Just me, a circular saw, and a drill. Nothing more. If I can get this done, anyone can.
First step was building the base/frame. I decided that I would make rack space in the front of the frame in addition to the boxes that would sit on top, so I sized the frame to accommodate the double width rack.
After chopping the wood and screwing it all together, I gave it a couple coats of black spray. Also sprayed a few screw heads and brackets that will be holding the top racks to the frame.
At this point, I thought it looked kind of dumb with the cross beams holding the front and back showing, so I found a piece of 1x4 laying around, cut that to size to cover the front, and sprayed that.
My new rack and rails arrived yesterday, so I installed the rails in the bottom and added the 1x4 to the front of the rack. I got the new top rack built, set it in place, and started to move some gear around. I'll add some additional pics when get the second top rack in place and have the whole desk filled up, but this is where I'm at so far. I'm pretty happy with the results, only regret is that I didn't make it 3 racks wide. Ohh well, live and learn I guess.
Sorry for the poor quality indoor shots, lighting in the house is awful. Also, is that NTI EQ2 the worst looking piece of gear you've ever seen or what? Man alive.
