Did you order from chunger? I actually ordered direct from Eric. He's a great guy to deal with.

Do u have a TC to compare it to? I'd love to hear the diffs...? I don't, unfortunately. I've emailed Tim so many times and even on this site and never heard back. I've got the CK12 from Beesneez, so that will probably be my comparison. From what I gather, Tim's not a fan of his caps being compared to anyone else's. He seemed agitated in a couple of posts in the HK12 thread on GDIY when his name was mentioned.

No tabs? Careful wiring that one up Ben. Looks nice. Let's hear how it sounds.

Did you order from chunger? I actually ordered direct from Eric. He's a great guy to deal with. Cool -- I keep forgetting Eric is local to me here in NC -- maybe he'll be amenable to meeting up and letting me hear some of his capsules, especially now that the U67 clone parts are available, and Eric has the hk-67 which I believe is $250 (compared to $550 for the neumann/senn).

OK, so the capsule is in the mic, but the front diaphragm is collapsing and sticking to the backplate. Did I get a bad cap or am I doing something wrong? It's wired the exact same way as the original capsule in the mic.

Ben,
Did you check all of you voltages in the ps under load.. As you know I personally mounted the capsule in my c12 to test.. Please feel free to call me as well. Sucking back like that is either to much voltage at the capsule or the capsule was damaged somehow during shipment.. You could also try the other side and see if it does the same..

I know you tested the cap before you sent it out, that's why I'm so puzzled. I basically took my Beesneez mic with the CK12 and just replaced it for yours. I'll test the other side and see if I get the same result. What should the voltage to the cap be?

Oh I thought you were putting it in a Chung c12...measuring the voltage at the capsule isn't possible due to the super high impedence.. Can you take a picture? In my capsule the backplates are isolated so you will need to bridge the two backplate wires. Sadly I don't know how Ben did his circuit so it's a bit more challenging for me to help troubleshoot.

I bridged the backplates, yes. I think the capsule is fine. I'll take some pics and send email them to you. I'm sure we can figure this out.

https%3A//soundcloud.com/magic-button-studios/sets/sound-test-beesneez-ck12-and-heiserman-hk12-mic-capsules Ok, we're good now. First off, Eric is great to deal with, and to be clear, the cap was working when it left his shop. I know this because he sent me clips. Whatever happened that caused the malfunction, Eric made good on by sending another capsule right away. This one worked without a single problem.
So, on to the test...
Matador/Chunger C12 with AMI T14 and NOS GE tube.
Here's the link to the Soundcloud files. Both the Heiserman HK12 and the Beesneez CK12 were auditioned. Levels matched in Pro Tools.
You can read the description, but basically there are three auditions, vox with piano, vox solo, and spoken test from 12", 6" and 3" away.
Go play...

Eric When powering up a mic for the first time after new capsule installation, do it with the PSU case open while monitoring the B+ voltage with a multimeter. I will have to consult Matador about the technical specifics, but I did see a spike like this on a capsule where my screw terminal connections were suspect. If carefully monitoring the voltages as the mic ramps up, you can immediately cut the power if B+ rises past the nominal 120V.

Looking for some more opinions about this capsule. I've got an itch for a build and I'm thinking about the Chunger C12. From what I gather, Campbell's capsule is the gold standard, but near impossible to buy. How does the HK12 compare?

indiehouse, I'd jump on Tim's invite; you won't be disappointed. I have his cap in my c-12 and I had my DIY build/mike checked out by Brain Fox ( QC on my build competence not the parts) and it tracked exactly to original specs; impressive !

Idiehouse, my capsule is available but the current lead time is 8-12 weeks. This past year I was swamped with orders and there was a period of a few months where my OEM customers bought up all my production. Most excellent timcampbell!! I would definitely like to take you up on your offer. I will follow up with a PM and email.
