I'm happy to announce the release of the Tonecraft BOOSTMATE I've had prototypes in studios for the past year and everyone loves it so I decided to formalize the relationship. I look forward to hearing your thoughts! THE TONECRAFT BOOSTMATE CONVERTS YOUR TUBE D.I. INTO A MIC PRE AND LETS YOU UNLEASH YOUR MICS ON PEDALS AND AMPLIFIERS The NEW TONECRAFT BOOSTMATE is a simple yet powerful solution that allows you to use microphones with your studio's tube direct boxes, effects pedals and guitar amplifiers. Simply plug your mic into the BOOSTMATE's XLR input and run a short 1/4" guitar patch cable to your Tube D.I, effects pedal or amplifier. Your Tube D.I. has now been transformed into a high quality Tube Mic Pre with an extra 20db of gain. Additionally your effects pedals and amps can being fed with a full frequency, noise free signal to create great amped and effected recordings without having to re-amp later. In the past the common fix was an inline Lo-Z to Hi-Z adaptor, but these units use tiny, unshielded transformers that are notoriously noisy, prone to overloading and dramatically roll off both high and low frequencies. The BOOSTMATE features a high quality Mu Metal shielded transformer with excellent frequency response, level handling and noise immunity. The body of is all steel and designed for heavy use. A fully passive device, the BOOSTMATE requires no power for use with dynamic, ribbon and tube microphones. -Compatible with all Tube D.I.s and Preamplifiers with gain -Turns your Tube D.I. into a Mic Pre -Fully Passive with 20db gain. -Use microphones with guitar amps and effects pedals -U.S. Made Price: $169. Introductory price of $129 valid until 12/15/14Available direct from www.tonecraftaudio.com

Im in! Love to use it with the Zod DI! It should work perfectly with the ZOD. It would patch right into the Hi-Z input and add about 20db of gain to whatever gain the ZOD has. Im not sure how much gain it has, but from Dan's descriptions I'm guessing at least 15-20db? I look forward to someone trying it out with it!

Good concept. What is the transformer turns ratio and the step up/step down gain in db's? Input and output impedance would be helpful too.

Jim, The specs should look familiar to you. 1:10 turns ratio. 150:15k impedance ratio. So we're looking at around 1500 input impedance and 20db of step up. I experimented with higher ratio transformers for more free gain but this came at the expense of a much higher output impedance and limited frequency response. The output impedance and level of the 1:10 is not a far cry from that of a guitar pickup so it works well with Hi Z preamps, amps and effects with nice high input Zs that won't load it down.

Hey Jon!
I want to try one of these too. I actually have a session coming up in a few weeks (imagine that! Me actually recording audio for a change). I'd love to use this with my REDDI.

Get Jon's DI and Boostmate ASAP. It's the only smart thing to do.....
THEN, cancel session and put all those saved hours finishing the Silver Bullet.
Otherwise, watch your back. There are OTHER bullets flying......

Hey Jon--it was great to talk to you tonight. Thanks for the chat! Brad

Brad Thanks Brad. It works great with the REDDI. I'm looking forward to people running it through all sorts of devices: compressors, EQs, pedals, really any gain stage. A HI-Z input is preferable from a frequency response standpoint but not required to maintain a valid warranty!

Hey Jon,
Would you be interested in me sending you a Chop Shop to check out in exchange for letting me borrow a Boostmate for a month? I wonder how this might work in front of an LA-2A...
