Is there any method using a DAW and all its metering to calibrate and set safe headphone levels ??
Is there any way to determine , measure what dbs level my headphones are putting out ?

You would have to know the eficancy of all your headphones and have a calibrated gain staging of the headphone chain..

A multi channel headphone amp and limiter is what I use. It squashes the peaks just a little.

I was thinking run the output of a headphone amp into a converter and measure the level in the DAW some how .

Jmo, listening to ur fav finished tracks, use a db meter at ur monitors and set them a sweet spot at 83db, and listen a bit. Then put ur (decent Q)headphones on and match what u heard on ur monitors, caution the low side, trust ur ears, as long as ur START at a reasonable volume, ur ears will tell u pretty quickly if the phones are too loud.

Ok , I'll give it a try . I wish someone would make a small cheap limiter which can be used in-between your headphones and headphone amp . Like a small little box preset to a safe DB level .

Invent headphones with built in limiters There's actually a lot on the market but kind of expensive for good sounding ones . Beyerdynamic make some , they cost $250 . I have some cheap headphones with a built in limiter but they sound very crappy . I would like to use the headphone of my choice and then plug it into some type of cheap limiter box .

A limiter built into the phones or in front of the phones will keep you from hearing the mix properly. Why not just set the phones at a reasonable level and not worry about them being exactly 85dB or whatever?

You have to know the amp gain and headphone eficancy !

I use a Presonus tube preamp with compressor, but this is just for rehearsals. It's too noisy to use as a preamp for tracking so I use it with the headphone amp.

I have a sound level meter app for my IPAD/PHONE.
Great tool for balancing my surround sound system.
I also use it to set a safe and effective nearfield monitor level, and also place the microphone between my headphone earcups to set max level. (80db)
