This is an extension of a previous thread (linked below) discussing the possibility of a more budget friendly version of the Sterling Plan Uno desk. www.realgearonline.com/thread/2081/desk-similar-sterling-plan-unoThanks especially to jcoutu1 for helping me hash it out, and popmann for calling out my laziness in initially not wanting to build one I'm a sucker for a challenge. Anyway, I thought I'd start a thread detailing the build in case anyone on the interwebs wants to take on a similar project and needs a confidence boost.... this desk was extremely simple to build, and IMO turned out nicely, and exactly how I wanted. It has the bonus of being cheap (<$250 for all materials including odyssey rack), and can easily be expanded to a 'Plan A' if I ever want more gear at my fingertips. I also made the overall height 5 inches taller than the Plan Uno (32" front desk height), to accommodate a keyboard tray and a bit more rack space below (8U front and back). Lastly I also added a tray on the back for my monitor. The one advantage of the Sterling (other than aesthetics of course) is that the top rack has a bigger slant, which would give a little better visibility to your gear. However, I like my monitor sitting low, so I'm happy with that tradeoff. You could of course build more of a slant, but that would have made the project more complex and time consuming. My goal was to get this done in 2 days without a table saw... Below are a few pics, and there's also a bunch more at the link below if you want to see step by step photos. Click the album, and then click the first image to start the slide show with captions: treehousestudio.imgur.com/Attaching the the legs/feet and forming rack boxes (working at night): Mostly completed desk before painting: After Painting: Setup and Installed w/Keyboard Tray Added. Now I just need more gear to fill up all that empty rack space!

PSI's.... sometimes I miss mine.... damn what a technical and detailed speaker, my ADD just get's overloaded though, I just lose focus with them for some reason, but they sure let you dissect every piece of a mix. Cool desk as well!

Cool desk as well! I do love the PSI's. Personally, I don't find them to be too analytical, although I have heard some speakers that IMO did fall into that category. Of course, everyone's ears process sound differently.... but the biggest thing for me is that the PSI's are detailed without being fatiguing and without resorting to the 'tricks' of other detailed speakers (such as boosting up mids, or cutting low mids). What speakers did you end up replacing yours with?

I had the 17's for a few days, but in my room, which is about 23 feet long, they didn't quite have the low end I was looking for, although I think many people are happy with the bass response in smaller rooms, especially if you position them closer to the rear wall.

What speakers did you end up replacing yours with? I replaced mine with a pair of 3-way KRKs.... they're cheaper speakers man, but I can mix better on em, like you said the PSI's are analytical, for me it takes my focus away, the KRK's just give me a good picture, give me focus in the mids, and are actually pretty good with the transients.

Hey mdmitch2, you convinced me to pick up some lumber tonight! Great! I'm sure you won't regret it. Let us know how it turns out. In won't be half as nice as yours, but should serve my purpose well enough. Still worried about not having enough rack spaces though. I'm doing 2x10 space up facing units. Still will have at least one 20 space too.

Hey mdmitch2, you convinced me to pick up some lumber tonight! I built the frame today and painted it along with some brackets to mount the racks to the frame. I decided to add an additional 16 spaces under the rack in the frame and ordered the parts I need. I'll post a fresh thread with some build pics, additional info, and the finished product.

Gotcha -- so could you add a 3rd/4th bay to the bottom while keeping the top the same size?

No room to add space unless I built another unit. I still have a 20 unit carpeted road case that I'm currently using, but was hoping I could get away from it. If I wasn't such a damn gear addict, it wouldn't be a problem.
