Was reading drbill saying he got one of these...I've always wanted to hear one of these. What ballpark is this in? I mean - is the goal for it to be a U67?

It's their own take on a tube mic, some love it others I have heard didn't like it! Then again every mic except C12 U47 and Elam 251 seam to be a matter of taste.

I'd say even the C12 / 47/251 are a matter of taste - or at least a matter of application as to whether "right" or "wrong".
John - the goal is NOT a U67. I don't think it sounds anything like a 67. I'd say it's closer to a C12 than a 67. At least if you're comparing to a STOCK U67. The top is quite open and sweet, but the mids still sound like a Neumann. My mic cabinet is heavily focused towards neumanesque tones (Neumann's, Gefell's, Neumann clones, MJE's, etc.) so I'm really looking forward to the sparkly top on this mic. I'd say if you already have an 87 it's a no brainer. Puts the mic's tone and performance up in the $4-6k range IMO. If you have to BUY an 87 to get there.....well.....then the decision becomes a little more complex. Best to rent one first. I know you can rent them in N'ville.
BTW, InnerTube has retro kits for U67's as well. I know Brad McGowan has one for his 67....

I've had both of Blackbird's here at some point...the converted AI is "ehh...fine"--nothing wrong with it in the grand scheme of mics, but it's not magic like their converted 87i with "Sly" carved in the side.
Doesn't sound like a 67 much at all. All C12 with a hint of German mid push. Perfect mic for my voice. Love it. Gorgeous.

Pretty sure it's just a tube circuit without de-emphasis, right? That would make it pretty bright with a 67 or 87 capsule.

Super bright. But, since it's not even CLOSE to sibilant....you know...bright isn't equal. Actually the 87AI modded one was a little spitty sounding--which is why I call it "fine", but not magical. No where near the chinese garbage being passed off as LDCs these days...but, more eshy than the 87i mod they have. I talked to Stayne (Innertube)--he said it was the exact same head amp with different pinouts, so the difference was the cap--which makes sense, because that's always been my issue with the AIs--some of them sound great, some "eh", and some horrible--where I've had at least 4 87is here at once that were literally interchangeable--and looked up the serials--decade+ apart in manufacture--they were simply FAR more consistent. I used them forever--never got one that didn't sound like I expected...then when I started getting newer AIs, I started having trouble....
Anyway--yes--which is why I said--it's like a C12 with a German mid push.
