Wiz, something must not be right somewhere. The VP28 has a low output Z, less than 100 ohms. It sounds like the devices in question all have a 600 ohm input Z. All of my modules can drive a 600 ohm load no problem. The level will droop about 1.5dB into 600 ohms but freq response and THD will not change much at all. In fact, the exact circuit from my console that the VP28 is modeled after, would drive the 600 ohm faders in the desk. If it is not an outside issue (cabling, patchbay, etc) I would look at the final opamp A3. Maybe there is something up with that build? You could try swapping the discrete opamps on the VP28 and see if the problem remains or not. The load on the first opamp is closer to 1k so the problem would either go away or be there all of the time. At least it will help us narrow down the cause. This is a first for an issue like this. Also, did you seat the opamps fully? classicapi.com/catalog/DOA_Install.phpI will check all this... it will be me, no doubt... thanks for getting back to me with some suggestions. Given I had problems building the 2520 thats the most obvious thing atm. I may have to end up ordering a couple(op amps) pre built. cheers Wiz

Do you have any 2520's or compatible in other gear you could plug into the VP28? Swapping the 2 positions might point to the issue.

I switched op amps (they are seated fully) and I can hear a faint bit of distortion with no outboard connected, this is with the 2520 now closest to the transformer. When I connect outboard the distortion doesn't get worse like it did before. So, I reckon you are spot on jsteiger, its a problem with the 2520, thats the one I had problems building. It might be best for me to order a pre built one, admit defeat on that little sucker and move on. I had a quick look at your website and there is no option to order a pre built, unless ordering a kit at the same time..I will send you an email.. thanks bud cheers Wiz

thanks for the link JohnkennI have already ordered two new opamps from Jeff, man that guy is good on the email replies and service... full brownie points there. Which will come pre built. Even though I am pretty sure I have a functioning 1731, I ordered a prebuilt replacement ... so I will have a 2520 and 1731 to put in my module, so I will at least know that they aren't the source of the issue. Then I will see if I can diagnose the issue with what I suspect is my faulty 2520, I am gonna have to find a cct diagram for that. It will probably take a week or more for the op amps to get me, and I am back to the f()*#ing dentist tomorrow, so probably won't post an update in here for a couple of weeks. When its working ,and my mouth is okay.. I will do another sound test. cheers Wiz at some point I would like to try the different iterations of op amps, I think even JLM here in Oz does some.

I always put them in last. You can set them in the sockets of a module to help hold them while you solder. I hate working around those pins when I am trying to solder the bottom of the opamp. Jeff, this is what I did when building my opamps....and now my vp28 has a weird oxidation on the faceplate. Think that's related in any way?

Anyone using 6-8 VP28's at a time for buss duties? Like a pair for gtr buss, a pair for drum buss, and a pair for mix buss? I'm thinking about selling some of my pre's and replacing with VP28's and using them this way.

What you're suggesting is a great idea, especially considering the vp28 is a killer soft kiss compressor 8)

What you're suggesting is a great idea, especially considering the vp28 is a killer soft kiss compressor 8) I've been running all of my tracks through the Colour CTX cinemag transformer modules.... but since I only have two, it can take a while with larger projects. I'm definitely going to start building up an arsenal of VP28's to use in a similar manner, and augment how I'm using the Colour units.... should save a lot of time and improve workflow, as well as adding some tonal options. I think (8) VP28's is my current plan... that plus my lola pair (which also has line mode), and a neve style or two (just ordered a Hairball Copper) and I'll have my ideal setup for tracking and mixing mojo. I guess what they say is true.... 500 series really is addictive.

So my VP28 is up and running. 8) Here ya go. Acoustic is VP28 with both knobs at 12pm. No HPF engaged. Shaker is VP28 with both knobs at 12pm No HPF engaged both of those are mic'd with a KM84, Acoustic is Taylor Mini Mahogany. The vocal is U87 into 1073 DMP into Drip STA and the Resonator is a MD421 into 1073 DMP This is a fader up mix. NO EQ or Dynamics on ANYTHING other than the STA on the vocal during tracking. all channels are open all the time, to show the noise floor. just two verbs sounds bloody good to me 8) dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13120658/wish.mp3cheers Wiz

levonyou are probably going to say something like, thats cool, or don't worry about it. I want to apologise that it hasn't gotten there yet, well, I want to apologise for not following up with you that you hadn't received it I track all orders I can, and make sure that each person gets a thank you email, then a tracking email, then I follow the progress via the tracking number to make sure they arrive.. I don't send a "Do you like it email". 8) Yours, I have no tracking info on. I can only see when it was mailed, which was 25 of November. Its not coming from Oz , but the USA. I will PM you with details of how you can download the CD, and if you think that its gone walkies in the postal system let me know and I will send you another. Again, sorry for not chasing this up with you. check your PM cheers Wiz
