I picked up a Warm WA76 today, and it's the first hardware 1176-type unit that I've used. Rather than googling and finding a zillion contradictory recommendations, I'd appreciate some starting points from people I trust. I'll be using the compressor mostly during tracking of vocals and bass. Here are my most-used recording chains:
Vocals (mostly female) will be a CAD VX2 (large-diaphragm condenser, one of Warren Dent's favorites), into a Heritage DMA-73, into the WA76, into a Burl B2 AD. I will also be multing the DMA-73 output into the other side of the Burl, both for safety if I over-compress and for the opportunity of parallel conversion.
Bass will be a Precision into the DMA-73 instrument input, into the WA76, and the Burl B2 AD. The bass will also be going to a Kemper Profiling Amp with the monitor out going into the other DMA-73 instrument input and the other side of the Burl.
I can also use two Warm TB12's in place of the Heritage. I'll have to figure out which I like better for other applications as well, including keyboard input.
Any tips?

fastest attack and release times, and all buttons can make a bass sound nasty(in a good way 8) transforms a real pretty sound and makes it cut aggro style .

fastest attack and release times, and all buttons can make a bass sound nasty(in a good way 8) transforms a real pretty sound and makes it cut aggro style . I like this at mix time for a rock bass. The distortion you get from an 1176 (WA76) is unlike a distortion plug. I don't use it in parallel either, just throw it on the track. A hardware 1176 also adds a certain depth to a bass that I don't get with my other comps. As for other settings - the old "Dr. Pepper" settings work very well for vocals and many other things -Attack 10 o'clock, Release 2 o'clock, Ratio - 4:1. Reduction to taste.

For vocals (at mix time) I will have the 12:1 depressed and use the input and output knobs like the hot and cold water knobs to run a bath...just turn them until I get the perfect temperature (metaphorically of course!)

If you want to make something sound 'clunky' (especially with an 1176) then DO use the fastest attack and release times. But for musicality with an 1176? Attack from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock. Release at around 10 to noon.
I have my first two WA76s en route to me now. I have a demo of my various 1176s I need to do and will include these.

As a general rule, I start at 4:1 with slowest release and fastest attack. adjust input to where you're getting a healthy reduction on your material. To me, it's easier to hear results on something like the snare. Slower attack and you hear more of the initial hit. Faster and you hear less of it. Faster release and you hear more of the "dong" and tone of the snare. Slower release and you will hear more "smack."

Here's my settings that I've learned over the years . I can't seem to find another compressor I like better .
Kick , snare , toms = slowest attack , fastest release , 4:1 ratio , -2 to 3 dbs , fine tune threshold to groove with the drums .
Bass = attack 10 o'clock , release 2 o'clock , 4:1 ratio , -5 to -7 dbs . Have the needle stay around -5 and peak around -7 .
Vocals = attack 9 o'clock , fastest release , 12:1 ratio , -15 dbs . Have the needle stay around -15 . This vocal setting makes the 1176 my favorite compressor for vocals . You can also try the attack at 3 o'clock ,

Thanks guys, some of these ideas I've heard before and forgotten about, others are new to me. I'll try out your suggestions when I have a female singer in here in the next week or two.

Remember: The WA76 is a Rev D clone. Now. What works with a Rev D?
Answer that, and you'll know the best applications for them.

Bryce=super cool, had a nice chat with him at AES. We have to get him over here. I've contacted him 2 or 3 times with questions and he always responds with thoughtful, helpful answers. Awesome customer service. Did you talk to him about the EQ they're working on?

Bryce would fit in well with Steiger, McGowan, Sinsay, etc. The guys who are shaking up this industry and helping us home recordists with their innovation. Lot of talk about how to grow the forum, give these guys their own sub and, with the positive vibe, who wouldn't want to be here!

He's here warmaudio. I already convinced him. Wa50A? WaTec? You have some info? I emailed Bryce a couple months ago and asked what they were working on next. Pretty much did it out of curiosity and mostly to suggest an LA3a (I've always wanted one). He wrote back saying he won't give the details but they're working on an EQ. I was surprised to get an answer at all, Bryce is a good guy!

I have found him to be very helpful, I was talking to him about my cl7802, like cowboy's and bryce told me that , upgrading the transformers with cinemag's would be cool and he hooked me up with David from Cnemag who asked for the stock tranni so I sent it and he designed a new tranni for the cl7802 with its tube environment !
I got lots of time for Bryce and Warm Audio products; very helpful guy !
