I've owned it. It was great and it's passive and doesn't affect the sound.

There is plenty information about passive monitor controllers on this forum. When they are new and not faulty or made with really bad components (bad stereo tracking and contacts) they sound the same. No coloration or degradation...

As I recall svart commented form the very beginning that people needed to understand how their interface functioned as he was not going to try to address every connection possibility.
Some interfaces interact easily with the svartbox (apollo) some don't (symphony).
Svart mentioned, he may entertain other features with future runs but as I recall he was financing all this himself and again he was frank that to keep going he would need to generate some operating profit by selling his first batch of units in their current design.
So with all due respect to our different situations, it is not true that all users need to have an additional monitor controller to use the SB and there is nothing wrong with the current design.
Perhaps, rather than debating this endlessly, we can start sharing what people's work arounds are by interface and/or how they are using it with their interface ?
Perhaps svart can introduce an actual physical passive control on upcoming additions and/or as a custom feature with additional cost ?

I don't think he's gonna want to deal with that, that converter is a great deal, buy a monitor controller, the one in ur symphony is a low end piece of shit compared to the passive tc one, and I'm not joking, apogee knows that serious guys are never going to settle for a built in attenuator, so the bean counters throw a cheap one in to appease, and I bet it don't cost em more than $5!

^^this^^; that would be cool: would that be just a physical add or need new software ?

^^this^^; that would be cool: would that be just a physical add or need new software ? It would be a separate box. I kind of envision each thing I do as Lego blocks. They can be used separately, or together. I would likely just put dial and some kind of indicator on the front so folks know how much attenuation is used.

even better, so one can purchase the RGO-1000 (current box 1) and the RGO- 1001 ( box 2) when produced !

I think that's a great idea, man...Something affordable and high quality...maybe a mono and dim...but not necessary. I would love one with a talkback...that would be the shiz.

Think about this...
Lots of interfaces have unused ADAT ports sitting on them.
What about a unit that does ADAT in and out and has 8 channels of EQ in it.
Hi and Low Filters
Hi and Low Shelf and 2 sweepable mids.
Inserts
cheers

Another unit I would love would have ADAT in and out converted to 8 spdif in and out (or 4 in-out at double speeds). This would also allow many users with those unused ADAT ports to attach multiple SvartBox's to their current interfaces.

Can we get one with three monitor outs, a coffee maker, golden op amps, handjob receptacle and it votes Republican?

if you're controlling the volume with you apollo, you're NOT using the DAC off the svart box the way it was intended to be used, you're using the apollo AD converters to convert back the svart analog signal back to digital, then using the DAC off the apollo to monitor, in essence throwing a round trip of conversion into the mix for no apparent reason. The Apollo has a feature in the settings for the Monitor outputs to be mirrored to the SPDIF, which allows the Svartbox to be used as a direct DA with the volume controlled by the Apollo volume knob. This still keeps your AD free and open for recording. I hit up Apogee about this and asked them if they could add this feature, and this is what they told me: Anyone care to hit up Universal Audio and ask them how they're attenuating the SPDIF output? I also asked apogee about clocking the symphony via SPDIF if you have the Thunderbridge, and they said "yes, you can clock it via SPDIF if you have the thunderbridge. Im not sure of specifics, but I remember our engineers saying it[USB] just wasnt solid enough to trust." So, who wants to buy me a thunderbridge and that monitor knob JohnKenn linked to the other day, so i can test the SvartBox properly? anyone? anyone? media.giphy.com/media/MkxZKy77sWoEw/giphy.gif
