Everyone is going to have an opinion - and they are entitled to it. I have zero stake in whether or not anyone buys this - but I absolutely thought the DA was much better than the RM 1794 I had and i found that I liked the clarity of the AD a little better than the Burl. Is it better? No - but I think my tastes have changed. Is it better than a Superbeast? I don't know - Dan can address that since he had the two in person.

Yes, that's pretty much his summary, that a stock superbeast and my unit are pretty much the same, and his modded unit sounds more hi-fi than mine.
I've been investigating any reason why my unit might sound "flat" compared to his modded unit, but all I've found is 0.1dB flatness from 10hz to 25khz on my unit. I have a feeling that my unit is extremely clinical in operation, to the point of sounding sterile. This might be good for those looking for absolute cleanliness and clarity, not so much for those looking for a DAC with mojo or an exciting sound.
For me, I use my DAC for monitoring mainly, so I wouldn't want one with a "sound". I'd want it as flat and clean as possible, at least in the monitoring role.

I wonder if svart could add something as an option to the design to make it like the Burl.

The unit is now off to Bannedchuck for comparison to a Symphony's converters.
Might as well update the progress on the units now.
I'm finishing up the ADC build and I have about half of the DACs built. All the chassis are cut and being readied for building. I'm still waiting on the bezels, which still show a delivery date of 6/1. I'm also finalizing the silkscreen work and almost ready to try my first tests.
All in all, I think the first 10 units are a couple weeks away from being shipped if all goes well with the machine shop delivering the bezels on time!

I wonder if svart could add something as an option to the design to make it like the Burl. Not on the current design. I could add a transformer option in the future, but that would mean the chassis depth would have to increase to fit the transformers, as well as redoing the layout of the PCBs.

Thx svart !
the last suggestion , if a transformer option were possible, could it be switchable in/out of the path ?

Thx svart ! the last suggestion , if a transformer option were possible, could it be switchable in/out of the path ? Sure, it could be made to to that, either with relays or an actual mechanical switch(to keep costs down).

I wonder if svart could add something as an option to the design to make it like the Burl. The burl sound is from its transformers. There is a thread here somewhere someone found a pre that was very similar sounding. Because svart's is so flat you could add your own transformers for the burl flavour

I thought it would be cool if svart had a "Burlish" option. I'm sure there's a way to add the flavor you need, butI'm not so skilled that I'd be able to get what I want, so a finished product with that sound is appealing.
Formatcytes, when you wrote,"you could add your own transformers for the burl flavour ", I'm curious how you would go about doing that.
Even if some of this s over my head, I enjoy understanding how it all works.

I ment as part of the pre amp Altho you could put a transformer 1:1 between the pre and the A/D. You would simply wire your pre amp outputs to the transformer and connect the transformer outputs to the A/D.

and if your pre has output transformers like a tb12, you can just drive that anyway but use its line out to the converters ?

This is gonna sound a little backwards - seeing as how I own a Burl B2 AD - but I'm not so sure that saturation is what I want from my AD. Most of the time, I don't literally hear any saturation from the B2 - it just sounds good. With the style of music that I do, I find that I am gravitating towards cleaner sounds. Now, I can see where this thing would be the cat's meow if you have a rocking track that you want to push into sonic crunchiness...but I'm finding more and more that I'm looking for things to translate how I put them in.

I completely get this having had the burl (which sounds great), but I remember way back in one of the other threads Jim , indicating that he would prefer a converters design with no in line transformers, so I started thinking differently about the burl design and then read this thread wtih svart's design premise adn I thought : perfect !

Have you ever tried to deal with the customer service department at the USPS. That is why I ship with an online service that dies three party insurance. It's just not worth the time.
