Fuck enough with this! I understand you want to make a nice GUI that feels familiar but god dammit PLEASE stop making 500 series sized plugins, I have an entire screen. There's no need to cramp knobs into a small space like that.

The API EQs don't bug me, the 560 could be switched to a landscape and made a bit bigger but the 550a/b are fine, they don't require a bigger layout. You hear a lot of guys complaining about the feel of working ITB and I'm not generally one of them but if an all analog guy said tweaking plugins like this annoyed them I could completely understand. I'm also still a bit mesmerized that no pro audio company has come out with a mouse to address this stuff but hey. There was a thread on here that set me off, cramming SSL style stuff into a module sized plugin, my two cents. When it comes to the analog domain, the 500 series form factor is what it is, most if not all have learnt to work around it but in the digital domain there's no need to cramp a GUI like that when most of us have at least 15" screens.

I think the nearest solution is to use two slots instead one for keeping more space on front panel, but manufacturers maybe think there are several/many customers who would not want to subtract one slot more to another gear. Other manufacturers use two slots because maybe think that space is important. I have designed an eq with six knobs and I have "sweaty" to have decent/good space for fingers to move them. Same thing for an optocompressor. I have done all in a slot only but I am thinking to a version with two slots .
