I have been trying to find a good verb for drum rooms, vocal chambers and plates. The ability to create spaces that are convincing and that don't collapse in a mix is really important to me.
I had been using Waves verbs and Audio Damages EOS with lots of work, trial and error and limited, but livable success.
I began doing some research and did some demos last night. I tried the Vahalla verbs but they seem very much like my EOS - flat and cluttered. Then I demo'd the TSAR-1 from softube and everything changed. There is a depth and sense of realness that I haven't heard in a verb before. The large wood room on drums took very little tweaking to sit in the mix. Then I tried the chamber on vocals and was floored. I don't know how.... but it sounded like depth and space without having a sound. I know that's impossible but sure does a great job of faking it. I think the quality is the same as my Tubetech plugs from them, if not better.
I'm about the pull the trigger and purchase but just curious - haven't any of you demo'd this?

haven't tried it, google "using early reflections in mixing", they are the best way to create a space with depth using emulations IME, another thing you may consider is to open a door somewhere in your place and run a mic away into another room and recapture the source your looking to create space on, the ambience is then indeed "real" sounding, because it's... really real 8)
hope this helps

I demo'd everything that was available including this (TSAR) before I did my new album.. which I just finished.
I ended up with Relab 480L and Valhalla Vintage Verb.
I use a combination of plate and hall verbs to get the "drum room " sound that I want.
if you haven't tried those give em a shot... the valhalla one is the bargain..
cheers

Interesting, because when Tsar first came out it didn't get a lot of love online. But maybe I'll have to check it out. I do think each reverb plugin hits you in a slightly different way, and that sometimes leads us to think it's better. I've used Valhallas a lot, but recently also use Exponential Phoenix and the new Eventide Ultrareverb. They all do very nice things but to my ears the Phoenix has the most clarity/realism.

Thanks for the replies: tonycamphd - too much work for my process but I do appreciate it. I need a great sounding tool that is easy to dial in and get me down the road. I know they exist. wiz - I did try the VVV and didn't think it gave me anything I don't already have but I think I will try the Relab - Thanks! lpedrum - interesting. I wasn't paying attention when it did but in my research, there seems to be some good press around for it. I've thought about the EA plugs but the bad UI is a bit hard to get around

there is an EXCELLENT video done by Micheal Carnes using his reverbs and explaining how they work.
They do sound brilliant!!
check that video if you haven't seen it yet, and then maybe have another look.
cheers

Reverbs seem to be pretty personal...I tend to use the UA stuff and VVV. Seems like I can get places quicker with those. I think it just might be which ones you know how to use the best.

Haven't had the chance to demo the tsar-1. I'll get on that ASAP. I'm also a big fan of the valhalla vintage verb and the waves renaissance reverb. The basic hall setting on the r-verb just works (for me). I finally started messing around with reverence in Cubase. The stock IRs are shockingly good!

I've thought about the EA plugs but the bad UI is a bit hard to get around I really like TSAR-1 - if you're not in to tweaking too much you might be able to even get away with it's baby brother the TSAR-1R. I demoed them and liked them quite a bit but, ultimately (like many of us) I have too many reverbs so I didn't buy it (same thing happened with SparkVerb) I do like PhoenixVerb for rooms - if that's too spendy give Acon Verberate a spin... it's pretty amazing. I LOVE Relab - my favorite ITB verb but... I sold it and would at least caution you to read about people's frustrations with the company's complete lack of communication, updates, etc. before purchasing. Relab has an online community (their online help forum) that basically is a ghost town. no replies, no updates, etc. Martin from Relab is a genius and has done the SSL X-Verb and the IK CSR verbs but I think he's spread too thin. For example, Martin said that they'd be beta testing the AAX port in "2-3 weeks" on 9/8/2013 and hasn't said anything since after initially commenting on it in 2011 as something they would do! The RTAS version works nearly perfectly but even it is still a BETA version from Jan 2013! (no full version has ever been released - you actually have to search for the installer in the threads to even find it) I'd consider buying it again IF it ever comes out in AAX. I'd buy it for sure if it was sold to another company. Relab not being AAX is the only reason I haven't gone to PT 11. Even if I had the slightest confidence that Martin was working on the update I'd probably upgrade. I really like the sound of the LX480. Going to VVV a try here pretty soon.

You're right, @johnkenn about the subjectiveness of it all and I appreciate everyone sharing their experience. rbradford, my mind is made but it would be fun to hear your thoughts. Having demoed the Vahalla stuff and with the issues surround Relab, I'm grabbing the TSAR-1 this weekend. I still have not heard anything that stands against the typical grain of things like this does.

OK - bought TSAR, love it, used it - best I have touched.
This plug is so freaking easy to dial in - really fast to get what you need and move on. I just used it on a short, live recording. This was the first time I didn't have to fight trying to find the right space for things with reverb.

I'm demoing it right now because of my frustration with trying to reinstall Relab on my new setup. I agree that it's very good. I'm going to see what I can get for drum room sounds out of it. I could sell LX480 and get TSAR1 and VVV and probably never look back. LX480 does sound great though.....
