Hello fellow gear heads.
My aging 2009 Mac Pro beast is starting to show signs that it wants to be replaced.
I'd like to get the very last version of the Mac Pro tower before they went to the trashcan design.
May I please have some recommendations on what to look for and what upgrades can be done to make it as close to the latest specs and speed as possible? I'd like it to last for 5 years or more.
PCI slots is a must for me, and I'm thinking of switching to the HDX cards as well for the Pro Tools rig.
Many thanks in advance,
Ward

I just picked up a NOS Mac Mini so I don't need a rebuild right now, but he makes a very persuasive case for rebuilding the 2009 Mac Pro and calls it "the best computer ever made." At some point I hope to have him help me upgrade my 2010 Mac Pro.

Ward I'm with tony on this one, spend the money on updating your current MP, it's the least expensive way of getting better performance and Slots. That, or the New trash can and a Magma !

Check this one, they'll do trades too. It's 16GB, but at that price you can go up to 32GB and still be in at a good deal. These are pretty fair guys, they will give you a pretty good price for your trade. www.powermax.com/parts/show/pow-t51364

I'd still love to know what the hell they were thinking when they came up with the trash can idea. I'd be willing to bet at some point they gravitate back towards that 2009 machine, everyone I know that is in audio or video are going with iMacs instead of upgrading to that new Pro. I'd be interested to know if any commercial shops are using the trash cans, I've never seen one in a studio thus far.

You know you're product is in trouble when people start referring to it as a trash can.

I have been a Pro Mac guy since the 7100, loved the 7 slots on my 9600, but more and more I feel like this new Apple just don't want me anymore. First the Trash Can Pro, then the Loss of the I7 server! It feels more and more like my next/ last Mac will be a 2009 Mac Pro tricked out! At one point this house of 2 adults a 10 year old 2 dogs and 2 cats had 4 macs! I do love my IPhone and IPad but It feels like Tim Cook era Apple took the pro out of its "Pro " products.

I'd be interested to know if any commercial shops are using the trash cans, I've never seen one in a studio thus far. Let's see....this is from 2010, right after they made the last Pro machines.... www.techrepublic.com/blog/tech-sanity-check/steve-jobs-proclaims-the-post-pc-era-has-arrived/No one using HDX will stay on Apple. You haven't notice Avid's creeping the word out that HDNative performance is far better on Windows than OSX? guess what? HDX is HDNative with plug in DSP. They made a set of solutions about that same time that are PCIe based....KNOWING Apple was dropping support in new boxes. They assume what I would--that a professional DAW installation could give a shit what OS it runs on. The he only people who care (much) are the people leveraging their day to day computing need machine for the production of music software. But, I would point out again that I've said my next home studio will likely be an iPad or Surface device--some kind of dock to the IO. Why do you think with my setup, I still gonna demo the SPL Crimson when they can get one into my hands? It already runs on iOS and Surface....and gives an analog cue and monitor control, which won't be a typical option.... but, a 2009 Xeon box shouldn't be running out of juice for audio production. Are you bumping against TDM voice counts or something? Never did say WHY it's feeling like it needs replacing. The answer to how to make it last 5 more years is simple--make sure you have spare power supply and main board on hand while Apple still has the parts....and quit installing their new OS.

A candy dish fits on top which can be filled with the client's favorite flavors of Jelly Belly jelyybeans or other crap delights. And they're silent running, which is a plus for those types listening on garbage speakers. Plus. they can rave about the miniaturization and radical art nouveau design. I worked in or with ad agencies for ~15 years, in addition to music production. There are some very vapid people there... and some who are worse.

you might want to check out the pro tools expert article from about 6 months back basically speccing out what you could get from older macs other than tbolt; there were some impressive specs in those machines and great prices !
