With all the U47/251 variants are people still using these Lawson mics or do you think the DIY with specialised capsules, and components are just as good at the same if not better price and performance.

While I only own the FET, the Lawson 47 is almost a sonic Dead ringer for the 47 that Gene used as a basis, for his design, but while do like the sound of this mic, it lacks something I hear in almost every other 47. When I think M7 , I think of the way it can create the illusion that " you are there" , Genes gets most of it right, but in this are it lacks. I do stil love the Lawson, it's a bargain, and a great system.
