Claims the converters and preamps in this one are even better than the original, if that's true it's time to start saving my pennies because I love my 1st gen and it's conversion. The Mic pres in the 1st gen are pretty good too, and this has features like talkback and lo-z with a thru-out for re-amping. A lot of good features and if this box is as solid as the 1st gen I'll have to have it. www.apogeedigital.com/products/ensemble

Not to be a buzz kill but better really means new version of the chip we used before or a chip we got a better deal on! I like Apogee, but I'd listen hard before I put any money into what I suspect to be a pretty minimal change!. Now a BLA mod....

I talked to an apogee guy at the AES show specifically about this because cowboy asked me to, strangely he couldn't answer a lot of my technical q's, which surprised me, because i know just enough to get by, and barely at that, weird?
My 2 cents, it might be good? not as good as the symph(which i like, but didn't love) I'd suggest loading it up with tracks! meaning there is a big trend toward multi 8 channel chips(i believe this uses the sabre 32 8 channel? probably a great chip) to keep costs down, they usually rely on single source power supplies for the same reason, and dynamic range/s/n suffer because of it, its always been the biggest problem for me, most (even cheap) units sound fine with a single track, then with every track you add the greying and flattening begins and progresses to the point of depression, the antelope orion uses 8 channel chips, and IME really tightens up and flattens out as you load it up, the best stuff usually has no more than 2 channels per chip on single power supply's ala Ross martins "superbeast", soon to be renamed "super bigfoot" due to it's tales of legend, and unprovable sightings 8)
I recommend making sure you get a good demo period and return policy, so you can give it a real good spin and digest it.

I said saving my pennies..... hey, that's a literal statement lol. I'll be able to read plenty of reviews before I'm able to buy one, because I don't really need it. I like my original, totally happy with it. If the new one has the same sound as this one I'll be in for it, the talk back feature is pretty nifty, from what I read they've upgraded the conversion and clocking. Kinda pricey though at $2495..... I'll be glad to take one off someone's hands for 1,500 in a bout a year or two.
