Some what impulsively, I just ordered a Rupert Neve 551 EQ. Front End Audio was having a 1 day 15% off sale, so I grabbed one.. its a few hundred cheaper than I could get one here in Oz... Line 10 "set self justification mode on" I figured I could probably sell it at virtually no loss if its not what I am hoping for. Line 20 "set self justification mode off" I kinda wanted something with a HPF, which this doesn't have. I am hoping its cool, haven't owned any of his stuff.. will post back in this thread when I get it and thoughts on it. (I should add, I have had a couple of outboard EQs before and got rid of them, kinda wonder why the F*()Uing I bought another now..... )

Gee Wiz Had I seen the deal before I sprung for a Drip Retro board and a Drip Pultec board I would be authoring this thread! I so want to try this thing But I have been warned by others This is modern Rupert, not Vintage. Inductor it is 1073, 1081 it is not! Those same sources though do say it sounds really really good with a 1272 based pre!
Can't wait to hear what you think, and yeah worst case I'm sure you can pretty much get your money back!

Do you still use it?

May need to look into getting a harrison EQ instead then

Honestly, most all of the new RN stuff is lame. I hear good things however about the master buss comp.

Think this is fair, but just to weigh in.
I have used the Shelford preamp.
It is totally noiseless with tons of gain, which is good for ribbons and often colored transformer condensers where you don't want midrange clouded, or transients or highs softened further beyond when the mic is already flattering the source.
Has separate line and mic inputs, inserts with mic output and eq input.
The blue silk transformer feedback control besides thickening lows, works well for softening highs, even just running overheads or hihat through, which I see the 551 doesn't have. The red is good on snare, guitars, and buses.
I wouldn't want to use the highs or mids on the eq without the silk options available, which do make a very noticeable difference, especially when cranked all the way. They are almost like 2 tilt controls.
The mids are good for cutting resonances and transparently controlling midrange. They don't have the inductor tingle of the 1073 or same ability to totally saturate output transformer on a snare.
I would say on the whole it sounds nothing like a 1073/84. The 1084 16khz is a thing of beauty. The 16khz shelf on the Shelford is good for cutting transparently, or the bell 1-2db boosts with the blue silk on, the 8khz for cutting guitars, and you don't hear the eq phase immediately when engaged as you do any 1073/84 clone. The eq is more like a GML or something with some color. The low end has a bell selector which I rather liked, when I wanted to keep a kick tight and not wide or phasey or add some lows to a guitar without adding mud. A BAE 1073 did not work well in those situations.

I think it's pretty hard to beat the original good old Neve high shelving EQ as mention by the prevous poster.
We have a pair of Heritage Audio 8173's (sort of a Neve 1081/Class A hybrid) and the 16khz and 12khz shelving get used a lot especially on vocals.
The 8173's highs are sweet and airy without the harshness that often plagues other EQ's when boosting the high end.
Ribbons generally get either a 12khz or 10khz boost (if they're very dark) while condensers get 16khz or sometimes 12khz.
As long as the original vocal is de-essed properly and is free of any nasties 6 or even 10db of 16khz boost rarely sounds wrong and can make a vocal very initimate and 3D.

Yes, a vintage U87 plus a 16khz neve boost sounds better than many current tube mics with bright but often sibilant capsules, unlike a good 87.
That and a little low mid shaping + good opto transforms the mic from thick clay.
