It's weird...I could buy a car with the credit I have at GC...but Sweetwater didn't give me very much...but I digress.
Honestly, I don't really know what I want. I don't need anything...but I want everything...
Attainable: Royer 121 AEA R92 another mic pre! another compressor
Most likely more than I want to spend, but boy, would this be the time to do it: Telefunken 251 Gibson SG VOS Burl Mothership etc...

If you guys had to suggest a pair of SDCs from the companies on this list, what would it be?

Buy some cheap ones and send them to Shannon... Great idea, just emailed. Yea, was looking at the 184s, I know they don't get a great rap, but the resale would be good down here in the south pac when I wanted to move on. Would mainly be for strings, possibly piano, and probably some foley work.

I really like my KM184, no modification needed. Ditto. The 184 is perfectly fine.

KM184 lover here too. If you look around on the purple site, there was once a thread with clips of the KM84 and KM184 in the typical "which one is which" thread that had a poll, "which one sounds better" kinda thing.
The clips were secret for a long time, which allowed a lot of votes and opinions.
Most of the people unknowingly chose the KM184 as the "better" sounding one..
UNTIL the OP revealed that the favorite was the KM184, then all kinds of bullshit excuses came out of the woodwork.
"files weren't exactly alike" "Files were probably mixed up" "my laptop speakers are shit"
ETC ETC
And then the poll votes started to change drastically in favor of the KM84 after the results were revealed.
It was pretty funny with the amount of internet face-saving happening in that thread. Posts were deleted or edited to take out the 1 in KM184.. And so forth.
Anyway, I say go for the R121. You can always return it or resell it if you want.
As I told myself when I bought mine, it's an investment in the studio!

Yes go for the R121, I love it on guitars. Recently I used it as a room mic on drums, did a good job.

The 84 and 184 sound almost identical. The 84 has a little more warmth in the low end. I'd use the 184 anytime. I personally prefer the 84, but then I'm lucky enough to be able to borrow it from a friend. If I had to buy one SDC now, the 184 would do quite nicely.

Nice, thanks for the info about the 184's. I was a bit hesitant as the purple site pretty much considers them the work of the devil. Good to know they hold up! And as much as I'd love a Royer, I think JK is next in line for that one. I'll have to check his samples, and then I'm sure that'll make me want one.

Is it me, or do I not see a "list"?
Anyway, my $.02...
I've got 4 beyerdynamic MC930's. I really like them and a pair can be gotten for around $800 if you look hard enough. IMHO very highly underrated. I think it's because they don't do as much advertizing as some of the other companies. I've also heard great things about the Beesneez Lulu's. I've only heard clips, but I own BN mics and they are really great quality.

+1 for another beyer mc930 user. Sit in between km84 and 184.

The 84 and 184 sound almost identical. The 84 has a little more warmth in the low end. This is how I heard them as well. 99 times out of 100, we filter that low end out anyway so why the extra expense for the 84's you know? Tony Rice uses a 184. Pretty sure it's good enough.

If I didn't own a pair of km84's I would buy some Joly Modded SDC's. I use those a lot at a friends studio and they sound great.
