So here my situation.
Currently running a Steinberg Mr816. Also added a Dangerous music source not long ago for its D/A (great piece). Running some outboard (Capi gear, BAE 1073, couple of delay units, Also looking at a pair of Kush Electra's. Extra outboard will be for my 2 Buss. As my VP28's are parked there for now.
In saying that, this is where the Mr816 is limited. incorporating outboard. as only 2 insert can truely bypass the onboard Pre's. at this stage im using the pad on the other inserts with the gain all the way down. Not ideal Been happy with the steiny, just think it might be time for an upgrade soon. Wife wont be happy if the hears about this.
Is it a noticable upgrade from the Mr816 to the Apollo? anyone who had both? Is it worth it? Also might open UAD plugins world
Cheers

Or what other options are there?
Also should say its only for Homestudio use. To cut demo's etc...

Definitely a step up...There's not much out there that does as much as the Apollo does. It's been a long time since I used the MR816, but I remember the DA being really tough. Pres were good, though, lots of headroom...

That's was my reason for buying the Dangerous Box. Way better DA. Don't really use the Mr816's pre's. Think I need to start saving. Hopefully the Tax man is nice this year.
What about tracking with UA plugs, Worth it?

Really depends on what outboard you have...It would be nice to have the compressors for tracking just taking off some peaks...

Just think this box will incorporate my outboard better. especially as im looking to get more outboard. Heard great things about the Apollo. Was only wondering if the conversion is a step up.
Been eyeing the inward connections brute for a while now as a tracking comp

Honestly, I would shoot for the Apollo first and give those compressors a shot. The new 1176 & LA2A collections are pretty dang impressive.

Yup. Feels like I need to upgrade my front end to the next level. Steiny served me well though

lolo,
Could you describe the difference in the D/A of the Dangerous? I have considered getting a Source just for the D/A and Monitor Controller aspect as an upgrade to my Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56

Yeah sure. For me the high end is more open and detailed. Low end is just beautiful. Also find myself using less eq. Makes mixing so much easier. Hear reverb tails better etc.... You just hear everything better. Just to listen music through it is sweet.
Even if i decide to get a apollo i will keep this for monitoring

Looking at something from them myself. Yes, that's what drew me to them; reputation. Plus I don't have a monitor controller - just the knob on my Focusrite that's really a digital controller. I wish the Source had a Mono button, however.

The Apollo is definitely worth the dough. For a home studio tracking demos, I personally don't think one could do any better. The UAD 2 stuff is really good and probably all one would ever need to make good records. And what gets overlooked a lot is the fact you can monitor at HD speeds with a lowly native system at no latency with buffers set at max. It's money well spent IMO. Just watch your spending on the plugins. It can get out of hand quick cause you'll want them all.

Apollo is a piece of genius. As far as quality, I need to upskill my lowly mixing capability first, before any "limit" is reached on the hardware side. And it will be a while.

About the plugs. I do have some good plugs I like. Having said that. I'd be really happy with just the new 1176 and La2a, definitely two EMT reverbs, and maybe space echo.
My wife with probably not smile if is she hears about this

If I only had the new La2's, Pultecs, Fatso and the 224 Lexicon I'd be happy. Use those on every mix but that's about it. Sometimes the 1176's.

I love the EMT250. I have the 224 but just don't seem to use it as much - what settings are you using on vox, Cowboy?

Mentioned my thoughts on getting a Apollo to my wife. Not happy. As we do music together I even went down the road of it will benefit us both. Hahaha
With a baby due in 9 months, my timing is pretty bad.
Hopefully UA will have a special soon.
