I am looking into the future and thinking about a pair of colorful single slot 500 series compressors. What do you guys think is the most colorful? Chandler? Awtac? Others? I absolutely love the Great River 501's (I will be buying more) and the comp sounds really good in the 3 Ingram 575 channel strips that are here, but I am looking for fast but colorful sounding comps to fill up the RTZ rack. I really liked the sound of the Pete's Place comp I tried out last week but it seemed a bit too over sensitive for tracking acoustic things. Slight movements took it to radical extremes for me and I watched it like a hawk all day on acoustic guitar. Thoughts? I am pretty covered with opto style comps right now. So, different, versatile and interesting voices are what I am looking for. Thanks in advance for the opinions.

What kind of compression are you looking for Randy? Fet type… opto type…
Given what is in those new ones from hairball they should be pretty darn good comps, good trafos, and with an 1176 circuit it's going to put off some mojo for sure, my U76 was great just to run things through, it's kind of similar to hairball 500. It did have all carbon comp resistors in it though, and those add some old style mojo themselves. That's one to consider, Thedonclassics.com is where you'll find that one. I'm a DIY guy, but I know there's been a lot of comps that have came out lately for 500 series and they keep getting cooler and cooler. Those Dakings that are on sale are pretty good comps I hear, I don't think it's the FET version, but Daking always puts out good gear.
Good luck, let us know what you decide on.

Yeah, I have built some things here as well in the last year. I'm so busy producing that there isn't much time to dedicate to that much DIY I am afraid. So,I will buy some things (probably fet)to make tracking and final mix more fun and hammer down here with my clients. My goal in the end, is to barely turn on a plugin, only for cleanup and sweetening final mixes. After comparing the real deal items to plugs in the last month, I am all about the analog once again. I am recruiting some help from Jim Gilmore here in Nashville to restore this ole RCA 76 character now and will be looking at comps once I have that tackled.

Here are the before pics. Jim Gilmore restored the Raytheon console that is in the Bristol country music museum/studio. He has found another matching program amp for this 76B and we will swap out the monitor amp for the 2nd program amp to make it stereo and as much like the Sun console as possible. It will have a few more functions than the Sun console, but the idea is to be able to record through it with the 4 mic preamps, sum in stereo and go sum out with the far L and R knobs. There will also be 3 big meters in the center when we are finished. We may just have them sitting on top and not disturb the original aesthetics of the console. Not sure quite yet but it is gonna really be something when we are done. R

Most colorful I have run into so far and it's a dirty color, but a fun like my neighbors bulldog pup in the mud after a bath kind of dirty color is the standard levelor. These inexpensive little devils are a great take on the Shure level loc. They are not something that works on everything , but every time somebody lets me use them the go up on my must have list. The guys at Standard are nuts, they come up with these awesome takes on some secret sauce we all heard about and find a way to make it work in the 500 series!

Try them they are a liven or hate it box, ain't no middle ground here. It was funny because I the first time I played with a pair all I could think of was that I hated that sound when I was using an old Shure mixer for dialogue , but man that thing sounds like Tchad Blake. Can't wait to try their take on the Dolby vocal trick with some new twists!

These are 3 slots each, but I sure do like the sound of them. They sure aren't cheap, but you get what you pay for these days most of the time.

I agree w/ ericn on the Level-Or - dirty and fun. They also have the Stretch coming out, which sounds like it could be cool, and definitely unlike anything currently on the 500-series market. One of my favorites was the original BMD Komit - colored, vintage sounding bridged diode design. I hope the Radial version holds true to the originals.

I already have the Radial Komit. It is a cool piece but limited use for me. I hear more distortion via the clipping than the sound of compression happening. It will sure make an electric bass cut through a dense mix. That is its primary use here.

R Forget 500 series, these are some of the best out there period. Aiso of note is the 500 Splice by Serpent. I don't think they will ever go into production again, but who knows. If we keep bugging Mike long enough.... LOL Luckily, I have a pair, and the A and D version of classic 1176 is unstoppable, and the best out there IMO. Also, the Serpent Chimera is killer. I have the SA3A's and they are AWE------SOME!!!!! My favorite all time compressor. If that style of compression suits you, there is no better IMO. The Level-Or's and 54's are on my list..... Also, if you need SPANK!!, the dynamites are super cool for that smashed 70's snare sound. I haven't tried the 500 versions as I have a vintage rack of them, but they are cool, albeit a bit one dimensional.... They are CERTAINLY colored.

All that stuff is killer, I couldn't agree more with this, i had to pick up a second pair. Mike is offering them again for a bit. For those who are interested, the Chimera is the SA3A in 500 form, they are both true La3a clones with the coveted mods already built in.

I already have quite a few choices in opto world and always seem to gravitate to them as I like their smoothness and transparency, but I need to go for something else that speaks differently to have plenty of choices for artists of all music types. I gotta try one of those Dynamites soon!

I had a vintage pair for a bit and they were colorful for sure. They were too much for everyday use so I grabbed something a bit more versatile for my small collection. If space and versatility weren't a concern for my rig, I would grab them up again.

I have been renting and borrowing this comp for far too long. I am so glad that Phil Moore of Retro Instruments was able to come by Slack Key today and talk me out of some money! Ha! A great and colorful compressor that sure has a lot of uses. The next tracking session Tuesday will be that much more fun! Attachment Deleted R
