Hey All, I took a short clip of the tune from my Tonelux/API/Waves shootout and ran the drums through some of my stereo hardware buss compressors hitting pretty hard with high ratios (mostly). The compressors are... API 2500 Tonelux TX5C Pair Regular John Recording Sick Sick Sick Thermionic Culture Phoenix Mastering Plus This is what we've got for settings... API 1 - 6:1, Attack 10, Release .2, Hard, Loud, New, Stereo Linked 100%, ~6dB reduction on the snare hits. API 2 - 6:1, Attack 10, Release .2, Soft, Loud, Old, Stereo Linked 100%, ~7dB reduction on the snare hits. TX 1 - 8:1, Attack 10, Release .2, Tilt, Feed Forward, Stereo Linked 100%, ~9dB reduction on the snare hits. TX 2 - Over Compression (Full CW), Attack 10, Release .2, Tilt, Feed Back, Stereo LInked 100%, ~9dB reduction on the snare hits. RJR 1 - 10:1, Attack 10, Release .3, Side Chain Enabled, ~7dB reduction on the snare hits. RJR 2 - 4:1, Attack 10, Release .1, Side Chain Enabled, ~7dB reduction on the snare hits. TCP 1 - (no threshold control and attack and release are switched settings not times) Attack 2, Release 3, Side Chain Max, Linked, ~7dB reduction on the snare hits. TCP 2 - (no threshold control and attack and release are switched settings not times) Attack 2, Release 2, Side Chain Max, Linked, ~7dB reduction on the snare hits. Everything went through the Midas VeniceF-32 converters/console, through the comps, and back to Pro Tools through the converters/console. Then I took the files and RMS normalized them to -20 and labeled them to be blind. Take a listen and fill out my form ranking them in the order in which you like them. When complete, you'll receive the key! Click here to get started!

Nobody huh? I understand that the API/Tonelux/Waves test that I ran (and nobody tried) only had subtle differences, but here I ran the compression harder, with drums only, through $12000 worth of compressors and the differences are much less subtle. Take it for a spin!

I did it! Having more than 4-5 options makes it very hard though..takes some time..too many options for the regular john musician :-) Actually I don't remember which was my favourite, believe it was H :-D

BTW, regarding the name of the Creator, our Captain, the Empreror, the guiding light in our dark lives, could it be considered rude to use the expression 'regular John'?

Your 3 favorite were my 3 least favorite. Go figure. Just goes to show how subjective all this is!

Your 3 favorite were my 3 least favorite. Go figure. Just goes to show how subjective all this is! It also depends on how you are using the compressed sound. The ones I liked the least were the ones I found most snappy. I'm using drum comp in parallel, and usually more interested in getting more sustain to create glue/fatness, instead of exaggerating attack/snap because I leave the original intact, and if I need more snap I'll use Elysia nVelope or Transient designer on the original channel. Also ime having snappy drums and having them upfront in the mix often results in mixes that's hard to get loud b/c of all those transients. This is just my experience. Would love to hear another view!

Btw, in the mix I finalized yesterday I did the things I mentioned. Pop/rock stuff isn't my everyday business, but regarding the very primitive way this was recorded (super low budget, drums recorded in a tiny basement room, everything else farmed out and recorded in musicians living rooms etc etc) I'm very happy with the result. The state of mix was before the duet vocal was delivered and before automation and last touches. TB audio 550A/BAE10DC/Elysia nVelope on kick, Hairball rev A/Elysia nVelope on snare, Zener limiter parallel on whole kit, the Zener signal also bussed out to Colour TM79 and blended in for a bit of hair. Very quick ML4000 limiting just to get the level up when sending a draft to client. Open for input, including the chain saw dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1141125/DontRegret.mp3

Great sound overall man.

Great sound overall man. Thx Tony! The hat was really loud on this track. Like 3dBs louder before I 'strip silenced' the snare. I wanted the the drums upfront on this one so I'm glad you're suggesting them to be backed a bit , but I did lower the snare like 1.5dB next day so we seem to agree completely. This mix was done Monday night, Tueseday morning I got the final vocal tracks, did the final tweaks and then sent for mastering the same afternoon. Final mix of the album, so too late for regrets now! Excuse me for hijacking the thread Jesse! The reason I put the clip up was because I was happy with how I got the compressors, Elysia and Colour module saturation working (snappyness vs glue), but I realize now that without a before/after this clip isn't that interesting. I'm totally aware that it sounds just as any other stuff!
