Wouldn't it be cool to have a physical controller for UA Apollo? I get tired of using the damn mouse to turn the volume up...

Specialized controllers are pricey and generic midi/Hui are always limited. Until the Pro Audio world comes up with a better open controller standard we are all screwed.

Really, I'd just like a digital controller that I could use for volume...Can you assign it to midi or anything?

I've got a TC Level Pilot in line with the main monitors. Works. You can't keep switching out of your DAW to tweak monitor volume.

You just keep Apollo all the way up?

I use the Level Pilot with the ULN-8 and Focals at home. The Metric Halo has a similar software console to the Apollo, it also has a front panel level control, but it's out of reach. I set the software level to about as loud as I'd ever like to hear it, then attenuate with the Level Pilot. The biggest drawback with the console is switching apps (and using a mouse or trackpad) to change levels. It's ok otherwise.
On my laptop, I have the Apollo Twin to set monitor levels.

The one thing to think about with those "consoles programs" is how is it dealing with the digital controls? Are you losing bits? As you lower the volume? I always find a analog monitor level control to be best.

This company offers a variety of monitor controllers: SM-Pro Monitor ControllersI have never used one, but they seem to have a fairly good reputation on the InterWebs.

The monitor outputs on an Apollo are digitally controlled ANALOG. But, JK's not USING it's monitor outputs, which is why he has to go into Console and not just turn the volume knob on the front is my guess.

SM Pro is good but not so transparent, sucks out some high end. The routing and switching is great on them though. I would recommend maybe the Level Pilot (never tried) or the Emotiva one as better possible guesses for transparency, if all you need is a simple level control. Or the A Designs ATTY, I bet that's good, and it's only $100.

I tried two of the Emotivas. Neither worked.
