Before I bought it. I liked that album he did with Glyn Johns so much I bought this one without even testing. I might not listen again.
I keed, I'm sure it'll grow on me, but I thought this paled in comparison.

I bought it too, it's a little dark for lack of a better word. I wish he had done more with piano and acoustic guitars like the last track on the album "Let Go'.

Again, just listened once, but I thought even the lyrics were cliche for the most part. Thought "Ashes & Fire" was much much stronger.

He's unusual in the way that he's so prolific. To use a baseball metaphor, it's inevitable that he fouls off a few times between triples and home runs. His Easy Tiger album had some sweet songs. Ashes and Fire bugged me. I felt it crossed the line of being harsh because of the volume wars, had some really good songs though, it felt much more "live", like a band played together than almost anyone else's albums these days.

I'm gonna point like a broken record....that this is DR6. Ashes was DR11.
This one on vinyl is DR13....and supposedly they even give you specially made DR13 320mp3s with a download card in the vinyl.
That said--the problem with this business model, is that Martina's I'll buy....because I'm gonna buy it anyway based on 20+ years of consistency, so I'll buy the vinyl....but, his, I want to HEAR first-because he's very hit or miss....and I couldn't make it through this--because it was DR6. So, I'm not buying the vinyl...
Martin--if Ashes was harsh to you, it wasn't because of the loudness wars"--it's the most dynamic recording I've heard out of a major artist in 20 years....along with the new Natalie Merchant also at DR11 (at least in high rez--I never bought the CD).

How in the world could I have been so wrong about this album? It's actually freaking amazing. Another reason I shouldn't comment on something after first listen.

Ok - I was cutting the grass the first time I listened...I'm gonna mark that up as the reason. Could really hear it this thin is like an early petty record - heavy with Benmont tench and mike Campbell. With a little Bono sprinkled in. Can't beleive I'm just now listening again.

Had another good listen to this one on the plane last week, such a great sounding album. Benmont really makes the whole thing gel. Songwriting wise, it's maybe not my favorite as a whole, but everything works very well as an album. After three Grammy nominations, I'd bet they let him produce himself again next time.

I'm going to have to start listening to this again. It's been a couple months since I've played it. I like most of the tunes, be curious to see if the album as a whole has grown on me. Certainly a great sounding, well produced album.

That's amazing how distinctive his playing is.

Thanks Popmann, it's always good to hear about some of the technical things I don't normally look at, like DR. It's quite possible, I'm just fed up with CD's in general. I've listened only to vinyl for about a year now, except when I need to reference a CD I own. I sometimes use Easy Tiger's "Two" as a reference when mixing. It has a huge, firm low end, that said, I still feel Ryan Adam's vocal mic sounds thin at times. Anyone know what mic he used on Easy Tiger?

I've never seen Ryan not use and Sm7 or a U67.

Thanks popmann, maybe it's the Sm7 I'm not too fond of. U67's are just fine by me.
