Sounds pretty much like what my 1073 does when I mix into it. I forgot the name but it was someone from GS who advised me to try it. The mixes of that album turned out pretty good. In general I am very skeptical about those summing mixers. It would make more sense if you have some AUXs for HW FX for example. I once had the opportunity to see one of those summing boxes from inside. I am not a tech, but it is not a mixing desk.

Looks like a nice piece of gear if summing is your thing. But I really think there should be moratorium on the words "fat" and "glue." It's starting to get silly.

Amen, but how would we describe what we hear or want to hear? Warm, Phat, Glue, Gelled, with Girth. Heft, and Weight. Teeth. Teeth and Air. Mojo. Cowbell.

Running the mix out through the Burl B2 or something like a pair of VP28's definitely added a "glue" like quality. Somehow, adding those transformers seems to round transients and tighten up the bottom...seems to make it more punchy and smooth. I wouldn't doubt this thing would do the same thing.

tonycamphd, you can borrow my glasses. Hey svart, what's a 1:1 nickel wound output transformer going to add? Do these 1:1 transformers add much tone? I obviously don't know anything about this stuff, but assumed that 1:1 ratio stuff isn't going to add much tone.

Rookie question, what sort of card/interface is required to be able to use the proper cables that are compatible with the input connectors on these mixers?

I have a problem with burls whole used car salesman, take you to the moon and back spiel, a summing amp is a simple thing, i believe you are paying for the faceplate here, it's not like there is a tranny on every input, it's got 2 output trannys, makeup gain via stepped attenuators with "audiophile" resistors? really?(translation-any high tolerance off the shelf 1% metal film @10 cents a piece, if they match them each L/R channels i'd be really surprised, i know steiger does that on the ML's), the 1:1 ratio on those "proprietary" transformers is more like 1:1.5 from what i've heard, and we all know louder is better, jcoutu1 1:1 still creates the same type of euphonic saturation coloration/compression when driven as any tranny to my knowledge. mobeach, you just buy (tascam pinout) D-sub to 1/4" or xlr's to connect what ever you need, they are readily available in banks of 8, check redco maybe? to be clear, i'm sure the burl sounds really nice, but for serious builders to use hyped up words like "proprietary" when referring to tranny's?? really? and "audiophile resistors" makes them look disingenuous at worst and douchey at best IMO.

Love it, no they tell you before audition waht you will hear and that can have a great effect. The best of it all was that they replaced their Ampex with the summing box. As I said it above I mixed into the 1073 it sounds different yes, and you get deeper/opener sound stage. But I have my doubts why using a summing box with two output transformers for it. I can have it for free with any transformer balanced mic pre which eats line level as well.

tonycamphd, you can borrow my glasses. Hey svart, what's a 1:1 nickel wound output transformer going to add? Do these 1:1 transformers add much tone? I obviously don't know anything about this stuff, but assumed that 1:1 ratio stuff isn't going to add much tone. The ratio is only part of it. The signal level going into the transformer can add DC residuals to the primary coil (if it's not gapped) and/or cause some saturation (soft clipping) if it's high enough. At lower levels the parasitics of the transformer can be non-linear over frequency so you can get various low levels of distortions. The use of nickel cores says they aren't necessarily going for transformer added distortion from the core. My understanding is that nickel cored transformers are more clean to lower frequencies that iron or steel cored ones. From this, I assume they meant the transformer to "smooth" the audio out a bit (with the parasitic C/L of the transformer) and then probably the SE to DIFF conversion that they are known for. They probably never meant to add Neve-ish like transformer tone or else they would have used an iron core with DC flowing through it for much more distortion.. EDIT: Thinking about it, ratio could also load the driver differently over frequency, so maybe ratio might have more effect on certain drivers than others, I.E., class A vs. AB or B.. Transformers generally smooth out the crossover distortions from Class AB or Class B drivers (like those in tube amps) which lessen the amount of purely odd order harmonics and give more of a mix of even and odd harmonics. Ratio on tube output circuits certainly adds harmonic complexity as the tubes are loaded down..

That sounds easy enough, my PCIe card has two 1/4" outs.

The only mic pre I have with transformers (besides an Avalon Mercenary Ed. 737,) is an Atlas Audio Juggernaut Twin. It's got 4 trannys/channel, servo switchable nickel and steel on the input and output. The nickel has a little more heft and girth and sounds more elegant. The steel has more teeth. I like the nickel going in and the steel coming out.
