This is pretty cool. I guess there are a few of these sessions at Capitol, but this one has piano, vocal, violin and cello. It looks like the mic is a u48 (as I recall, Capitol has u48's over u47's). I'm assuming it's in figure 8. I like this, it seems to bring out the honesty in the music. A refreshing change from the over-processed, over-polished that has become the norm.

this is great! The mic would have to be omni no? The cello comes through harder on my right than left, it probably has to do with eqing on the stereo verb.

Excellent sound. Did anyone else get a weird chorusy sound in the background in some places? Probably just my laptops crappy sound card.

I saw that one a while back when I was looking for Beesneez mic clips. Great recording, great sound. That Arabella is so sweet.

I assumed it would have to be omni, but I thought Capital only had 48's. I tried a test with my MK47 but for some reason it's not going switching to omni. ugh.

1 mic 1 take, my ass. A single mono microphone doesn't produce stereo movement from the lower and upper piano registers.

There is absolutely no way to get that pure sound between the instruments when the singer's head is blocking the pickup pattern of the violin and cello behind her. I just got done recording violin. They are MUCH more quiet than anyone knows. To get that kind of level in the recording, it'd either be 10x louder than any violin I've ever heard, or the mic would have to be 6" away from it. I call BS on this too.

I watched a few more, and I think there's some shenanigans going on here too. There is no way this one ELAM251 is picking up both the piano and vox that clearly, nevermind any stereo information that may be present. I'm listing on my TV speaker, BTW, not in the studio.

I thought that also, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt, a better AE than myself 8) with a sensitive 47 in omni pattern in a super quiet/musically excitable room, adding a stereo reverb? I think it can be done...

Back in the day those sessions were 100% union including the engineers. Producers almost never allowed photographers into recording sessions. Most of the pictures and videos you see were separate photo sessions where the photographer chose and placed the mikes.

Amazing how with only "1 mic" they could get stereo digital reverb on Aaron Neville's voice but not on the piano, innit?
