This year, a friend of mine, Martin Kolbe, released his first album for 23 years.
He was known in the 70's and 80's mostly for his groundbreaking work on unique virtuous acoustic guitar playing in a new age/jazz/rock crossover style in a duo with Ralf Illenberger, who lives in Arizona nowadays, but came over to germany for a short tour to support the CD release, as well as Peter Autschbach.
With this album, Martin came to the singer/songwriter genre for the first time and steps a bit back from the virtuosity and has a kind of relaxing understatement and maturity.
In this very personal album, he adresses his decades of experience with going manic and depressive repeatedly due to bipolar disorder, a psychic illness that forced him to went out of the music business back in the days, and the losses and insights from living in extremes in consequence.
In germany, bipolar disorder is still very stigmatized, so this is also a very curageous album for a public musical comeback.
The album features mostly a quiet and sometimes dark mood while still giving you a warm feeling and is well worth listening.
I had the pleasure to have one or the other conversation with him about this project, musical creativity and his concerns about how to accomplish to get back to active music making after such a long time.
So i am very glad it turned out so well, because he is such a creative and talented guy...
In the meantime, his label Stockfisch also re-releases his very early solo album "Blue Moment" from 1977 to digital media for the first time.
But for now, some first impressions from "Songs from the Inside"...
Feel free to share your thoughts.
You can glimpse into and buy the album at all the common places (amazon, itunes etc...).
Best regards,
Martin
