Just wondering why when I look at my 24 bit file, it's showing up in itunes as 23 bits? Or 2304kbps I'm not wringing my hands over it - just wondering.

Size of a multimedia file in bytes divided by the playback time of the recording (in seconds), multiplied by eight.

Kilobit per second. Important for streaming of audio, because this is the speed you need technically for your streaming device and transfer medium to transfer this particular audio in realtime manner. In compressed formats, also especially audio and video, this value is also very important because it determines needed decoder speeds, estimated quality, size for storage etc... I quite had read alot about digital audio and video formats when DVD came out... So, this one reads "rate" as speed/flow-rate...a bit unfortunate both units share the same name in digital land...

If you feel more comfortable with this, call 24 bit your 'bit depth' to distinguish the different meanings..
