This vid talk is very informative and goes into good depth about distribution formats, lossless/lossy, bit depths/res/encoding file formats, the damage created by transcoding, and the future of streaming and diffs in their success(lack there of) of sound pertaining to artistic intent. The biggest single points i took from his talk was the idea of him NEVER dumbing down his mixes toward any single format whatsoever, and the future of audio quality is looking up.
Delivering the highest quality resolution and best sounding mix you possibly can is a good idea, because everyone else will beat the shit out of it for you, the better it starts, the better chance of quality in the end.

Except, having heard the Guitar Hero masters....he's taking the credit or flack for what he didn't do--those versions are DR12, like I"ve said--EVERY FUCKING MIX I'VE EVER BEEN WITNESS TO* in decades has been-- DR17-DR11. Mastering, by simple function of what it does (smoothing song to song playback and optimizing digital resolution for delivery format), always remove some amount of dynamic range from the most dynamic to better sit with the less...anyway...this is why there's simply ZERO good excuse for single digit DR masters.
His dismissal of DSD as "no consumer format" is fucking weirdly offputting. SACD circa 2001--you know, the intended replacement for CD...what was he doing then**? I would actually agree it's a silly format for download/files, because it's MONSTROUSLY huge....it was developed as an archival format. Wonderful as "same size silver disc that has both redbook AND DSD-again circa turn of the century). That said, I promise it's the only one I can clearly tell without direct comparison. I can tell mp3(not aac)=bad....I can tell DSD=best....all day every day. All the stuff in the middle...? Ehh.
*whether I had anything to technically DO with it or not
**literally--go look at his discography....it's telling. Answer=not being an audio engineer so much as programming computer sequences and digital editing. None of which works when you leave behind PCM. He's made a career of PCM manipulation and computer based editing. This isn't trivial for this discussion.

Side note....anyone actually find AuraStream? There's a number of companies with the name and similar...one even does live streaming VIDEO...but, I was going to look into using it to host my work as kind of a permanent way to upload whatever is done at the studio--regardless of sample rate or bitdepth...and know it's possible to pull a decent stream up....or not....but--I wanted to try. Because if I can pull a linear 16/48 stream to my phone, I promise that will sound better than some Soundcloud link...or whatever's cool now.
I was gonna play with it....but, I don't see anything to play with....

Let me know if anyone knows what the actual site is...he claims you can use it now as a personal iPod (his implication being that's "all")...but, man--if I can't find you in ten min of Google searches, I think they're buddies of his with an idea trying to get the Google boys to buy from them.
High quality streaming is simply an answer to a question no one is asking. High quality AUDIO delivery is one thing (solved circa 2000 and still possible today)....but, streaming services don't even pay anyone jack...WTF do I care what quality they stream at? I get the idea that as an artist you want your art played at it's pristine....blah....I want to be paid. That's what allows me to continue doing my art. Without it, I'm simply posting my own weekend fun project stuff for people to listen? 24/96. Free download. you can do it today. From your own site or Bandcamp. Anyway--with no back end worked out (thus the supply chain actually NEEDS them to dumb it down so they still have something worth something to someone), and no one on the demand side giving a shit....

If audio fidelity starts to matter to the masses that stream, you are way ahead of the curve with your ability as an engineer, which in this theory should have you in demand, and working like crazy? here's to hoping 8)
