wondering if anyone has had a look at this kit?
the sound samples although on youtube really sound very nice to me. I'm not sure of any other 1178 kits on the market?
penny for your thoughts?

The 1178 is all IC based, unlike the 1176 which was mostly discrete until the later revisions. I'm not sure it matters to you, but it won't be similar to the 1176 sound, and thus the reason for the rarity of 1178 kits.
However, there are plenty of 1178 schematics floating around, so I'm fairly certain that this one is probably a perfect clone besides the usage of the Lundahl transformer.
It's probably a fairly cheap build, due in part to the usage of common ICs and combining of the controls to a stereo only function.

thanks svart,
I am specifically chasing an 1178 for busses so hoping it is a very close version but ultimately hoping for some tone comments.

Since it's a copy of the real 1178 it should have most of the same tone. However, since it uses Lundahl transformers, it'll have less "transformer color" than other transformers would.

It's strange, I have always known a group of guys who Have preferred the 1178! I never got it myself, but then I have had my MC76s for years!

It's not going to be terribly different tonally, just cleaner. it'll probably still have that rather fast compression effect of the 1176, but without that extra class A sound of the early models.

From what I have been told. 1178 is cleaner and smoother. That sounds up my ally.
