The price tag sure stings (even used), but I finally got a pair. Glad to know I’ll never need to buy tom mics again.
I’ve used them a few times before and was always impressed but I hoped there were cheaper alternatives out there to get me what I wanted. Tried the ATM450, Shure Beta 181 and the Samar MG33. The Shure and the Samar are passable for sure but the Josephson is just perfect!
Keeping the Samars for tight spots but the Shures can go.

They are amazing mics. Great on tabla, hand drums, even acoustic guitar at times. Enjoy!

That has prevented me from trying them. They've come down in size though, with the adaptation to the 'Tom' mic. Although considering how easy they are to wiggle around and the secondary arms, I don't encounter issues. Have to wonder why they needed a smaller cheaper dumbed-down version . . . oh wait, drummers. (I KEED I KEED)

Well done - bet they sound fantastic.

They are stupid good sounding. Yeah it kinda sucks using them because afterwards you’ll always be chasing that sound…and it’s just so hard to justify spending that type of money on each Tom mic…

Especially if you divide the cost of the mic over the number of tom hits in a song! That's hundreds of dollars per hit!

True. I loved it on snare too, though. I think the payoff might be bigger there. But lots of other options for snare that work already...

Good to hear though.

I’ve always been on the fence with jettisoning my 414 ULS cohort and picking up the e22s for tom use. Lately I’ve been using the Oktava 012s on toms and haven’t switched back in a bit. Maybe it’s time to give the AKGs some more tom time and make a decision.

Can't help with the mic situation but don't get rid of anything you might miss. That's a bad feeling down the line.

The e22 is awesome. Perfect rock tom. The transformer beefs up the low end in a way the samar 33 can’t touch. However, on kits and in styles where beef isn’t desired (eg - jazz) the 33 is still the winner for me.

They’re amazing. You can use them anywhere. Terrific on acoustic instruments, nice full bottom, good presence without being bright or harsh. I love it on acoustic guitar, brass, low strings, amplifiers, vocals, whatever. And I used to use a 57 and a schoeps (or 451 depending on where I was working) taped together for snare and since the e22s I just put the one mic up and push up the fader. It’s a wonderful tool.

Never used them on toms cuz I didn’t think they’d take a stick hit too well. Maybe should have kept them for Tom reso. Cheaper than another pair of e22s. Though my good old X1Ds are working for me right now. Kinda funny to pair them with the e22s since I think I got them for like $72 each

The GAS/FOMO in me was thinking this too ahahaha. Do I really need to be thousands of dollars deep into tom reso mics?? What a time to be alive!!!
