Braingasm sent me their new Ocula omni mics to check out, along with their yet to be announced small cap mics. The omnis are true pressure sphere mounted omnis, something I don't really have much experience with (which is why I was curious about them). I'll be doing a normal long form video on all of these, but right out of the gate I'm pretty impressed with them. I've never been a huge fan of doing omni with most normal microphones, it always sounds "off" and weird to me no matter what I do. I've had many people tell me the pressure sphere style capsules are a different beast, and I have to agree after messing around with them a bit today. I did all the acoustic treatment in my live room "by ear". I dealt with some problems in there, but still tried to keep it really open sounding. I can usually just back a normal mic off a little in cardioid and get a good balance/avoid having to add a room mic. Aside from drum rooms, I don't need or like mic'ing the room for acoustic insturuments.
This is the first pair of mics that sound the same way through the speakers as I hear my room through my ears when I'm in there. Even when they're 10-15 ft back from an acoustic guitar, they manage to keep it sounding up front and blend in the reflections "accurately" as I've always heard them in the room. This is the first omni mic that's sounded accurate yet warm up top. I'll have to spend a lot more time with them, but initial impressions are really good. I'm excited to use them more, I definitely don't have anything else in my mic locker that can do what these do.

Wow those omnis sound fantastic. Very rich and spacious, filling the whole space without being thin or tinny.
The near/far mix was really luscious. That plus a vocal would form quite a great foundation for an entire song. Very solid.
Looking forward to the long form video :-)

Their mics look super cool. Forget how I first heard about them. I’d be interested in hearing you do a review of the magnitube if they ever decide to send you one.

I think he's also the head designer (can't remember the official title) for Stam and works with a few other companies. Teo's a smart guy.
