Wondering how to get that sweet vocal distortion they have a on a lot of tracks. In fact, seems it was very common on vintage recordings...i.e. where when the vocal goes above a certain volume threshold, it distorts so pleasingly. Is that the pre or the mic they're using, or something else? Thx

So funny, I was just playing the record as I opened this. There is some of the aesthetics in the vocal sound I can hear some other of Daves productions like rival sons (esp. great western valkyries). That mid range sweet saturation. Back in the days you can hear similar coming from tape (robert plant) but here I think it’s more deliberate. I am not sure what technique is used there, but I would do it in parallel. Something like UAD610 plug driven hard together with some hp and lp. 1176 all in+pre or tape saturation riding it in to taste should get you close.

Couple tunes I checked out the main vocal has a little grit which is probably just from slightly overloading the 47 or 67 or whatever he's using, and a little burn on the pre. Maybe tape. But most of the grit sounds like it's coming from hitting the tape delay/verb hard so it breaks up. That mono slap/verb (space echo? Or just tape predelay to a mono spring/plate?) is making it nice and dark and gritty when pushed. I really like how it's mono, so it doesn't wash out the whole mix...

If they tour with the Stray Cats… It could be the “Johnny Cat Tour”! (Too bad there’s no Sands left in Vegas )

Yeah it’s very cool, sounds like a lot of 50’s and earlier stuff…even The Beatles on some tracks. Although Dave has perfected the sound, much more tasteful.
