We've been hanging out in lobby all day because our room isn't ready yet. We've seen most of the band head out for the venue. There's been increased security gradually lining the downstairs hallways, and there's a couple of families where the kids are all dressed up like the Fab 4 from Sgt Pepper.
Added: one of the Dads may or may not be the guy from Drunk History.
Added 2: we all just got corralled into an area by security so it looks like he's definitely coming.

Unfortunately, my technical questions were drowned out by a sea of “We love you Paul!”, but we were 2 or 3 feet away from him. I would have been just as likely to ask if the press material for *McCartney* will ever be updated to indicate that most of the album was recorded (and mixed) at Abbey Road. So many generations of home recordists frustrated and wondering why they can’t get the sound of “Maybe I’m Amazed” from their living and dining rooms 😁 |

Well, to be fair…there aren’t many studios with an army of U48s and a REDD47 console hanging around to be recorded in…but your point stands: it wouldn’t have mattered what he recorded it on. |

Saw him in concert 10 years ago in Minneapolis, and again 5 years ago at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. Fantastic both times!

I have stayed in the hotel Macca and presumably Wings stayed at in the early 70s when they were recording in NOLA. I was ther 15 plus years after the fact. A couple times. As I recall it was pretty reasonable at the time. I saw Lanois in the quarter on one of those visits. I would later learn we were kinda sorta in the same hood in Toronto. But that is getting OT.

He get’s about - a lot of people have a Paul McCartney story! I sat behind him in the royal box (no less) at a Genesis concert in 1986. I plucked up the courage and asked him what he thought of the band and he was definitely a fan! I went back stage to meet Phil Collins and after 10 minutes it was times up mate ….. Paul’s arrive to see Phil. Phil Collins in his day was super impressive, massive drum sound, spectacular playing and that expressive tenor voice. Talent will out - as I got older I started to realise I just wasn’t that talented |

Absolutely do not want to hijack this awesome thread, but just in case you haven't seen this YouTube channel that goes in depth into the Brian Wilson compositions, I'd highly recommend it! It's an utterly fun video series, the creator Tim Smolens is creatively quirky, and the insight into a vast array of Brian Wilson's compositions is stunning. It's truly a tour de force. There's a ton of awesome insight across his videos, here's one for example. |

I think he's back in Hamilton now but during Covid he mentioned he was living like a couple neighborhoods over from Daniel Lanois. Can't remember where exaclty. Anyway, great musician and something of a producer/engineer himself. Bryce Clifford, his brother owns Clifford Brewing (great beer). Great guys. |

You May find this heresy, but in my opinion the best guitarists are NOT those who gloriously dominate the stage with their incessantly wailing doodly doodly dooooO0Oooooooo (SRV, Yingve Malmsteen), or those who look tooo cool for school while incrementally and intricately riffing on esoteric minutiae (Paco de Lucia, Pepe Romero), or those who feign to be in a band but as soon as the spotlight May swing towards them lose no time in stealing it to showcase their personal sizzling solos that rip my ears out of the song's storyline and scream to me "Look Ma, No Hands!!" (Ace, Eddie). No sir. To Poppa, the best guitarist is that who isn't necessarily front an center at any point, but isn't some shrinking violet lurking about and wallflowering in the back. One whose contribution is absolutely essential to making the song the song. One whose guitar completes the story... Like you can hear the rest of the song singing "You Complete Me" when the guitar dips in and out. One who, even when their 'solo' time arises, ensures that it continues the breathtaking story unabated even as I listen with bated breath. There is no limelight here for this guitarist, just a set of sweaty dudes rocking their souls out to tell us their story. Each has a part to tell, and our guitarist doesn't sit at the campfire and demand to deliver the story punchline from The Golden Arm while relegating other band members to clapping at the delivery. Brian May is this mythical guitarist incarnate. Evidence is everywhere, but this following piece of evidence is utterly irrefutable that he fufills the purpose and function I described above: I mean... My God Man! May literally carries the story in his solo (2:55 timestamp)! May's guitar literally completes Freddie's topline melody with his guitar at points as Freddie's vocals acquiesce. I never hear other guitarists do that. I'd love to listen to other May-esque examples if they exist. PS- I respect all those other guitarists listed above and all other that fit the egotistical archetype. But, May? I like him :-) |
