I like the possibilities of iZotope Aurora and verbs with “smart” dynamic EQ built in, instead of full-range ducking or static EQ, but I have a lot of verbs and 1 instance of Aurora makes my GPU cry.
I set up a couple of options on the verb return with Soothe 2 and Nova respectively, using a send of the dry signal in the external sidechain, and both have their strong points. Soothe is more surgical and carved, whereas Nova is more broad and sounds more like traditional ducking but with more contour among the various bands. I really like having this as an option while also being able to apply it to any reverb I want.
Anyone else rolled their own here?

Fabfilter ProQ3 works for this or MB Pro.
Soundtoys Super plate has ducking built in too I think.
Another popular one to use(I haven't but have heard its good) is Trackspacer by Wavefactory.

I forgot Trackspacer! Here I am working on bespoke solutions and forgetting that a tool already exists to do just this thing 😂 That said, I like what the two presets I put together are doing so far so it's cool to have a third one to add to that. Re: built-in ducking, aside from Aurora I'm not always a fan of how plugins with that function built-in handle it. I feel like I'm always struggling to find a sweet spot between pumping and placebo. The dynamic EQ approach feels easier to dial in to where you get clarity in the vocal/track without an obvious level drop. ProQ3 is also a cool idea because Nova GE is limited to six bands.

Always use reverb on a send. Don’t be the typical producer and back yourself into a hole.
I like to filter out lows before the reverb insert on the reverb send and any potential nasty highs after. A dynamic eq for snares and emphasized kick hits such before the reverb is very useful. I don’t like too many bands to not change the kit like crazy. Nova GE, Oxford Dynamic EQ, Weiss EQ1 (Change to normal latency) are fine.
Soothe is cool for random cymbal wash. So is Oxford suppressor or the Weiss ds1 band pass or de-esser Yeah suppressor makes everything mushy but it’s a reverb send. You can also side chain to the dynamic eq or use track spacer. TDR arbiter is probably sick here.
Also… ditch the vintage verbs. Ditch the meme verbs. Get better reverb. This is key for quality of life. Do not use barely supported stuff that will die or change the sound of. The built in quality of life features can save you time and better sound save you work. I like Oxford Reverb, Eventide SP2016, the Liquidsonics Tai Chi and Cinematic Rooms, Goodhertz megaverb for fx, Acon Verberate, Relab Sonsig rev-a (way better than their emulations), Softube Tsar, and the new velvet noise reverbs like Apulsoft ApVerb.
I would avoid entirely: Lexicon PCM Native and Exponential Audio. These sound great but are on death row update wise. SSL Flexverb (this is horrible and replaced the excellent X-Verb developed by Relab). Fabfilter Pro-R (big sound changes between versions and it just doesn’t sound good so if you tweaked it to not suck, it might suck). What comes with your DAW. Don’t be tethered to something primitive you won’t be able to use outside of it. Waves reverbs. You have to tweak them to not suck.

How do you use this one? I am curious -- I remember I tried it about 20 years ago and I wasn't fond of it, but I might be misremembering if it's still useful in 2024.
