Warning. I might nerd out a bit here too. I had been contemplating updating my wifi because it just barely reached out to my studio (which is about 80+ feet behind the back of the house) and my connectivity was very spotty. I was lucky if I could get 1-2Mbps download, so I generally avoided it and put updates on a USB stick. Wifi was pretty much for "authorizing " plugins. Of course that did not help much for my guest wifi since it pretty much suffered the same issues (and clients like their wifi...). I upgraded yesterday and it's SOOO much better. The range has increased significantly.
My old Wifi system was a Deco S4 (3 of them) mesh system and I had them spread out in the house. The studio was connecting to the one on the back of the house, so that already meant one hop to the "main" unit which was connected to the router. the Deco S4 was the older model - AC1200. It had 2.4GHz and 5Ghz, but the 5 didn't really reach out to the studio very well.
the new system is a Deco X5700 (2 of them). I bought a refurb pair from Amazon. The box was a little rough but the units themself were fine and work great. I was first going to "add" them to my existing system but that turned to sh** very quickly so I just reset everything (and used the same SSID and password) and everything reconnected automatically (almost). I decide to keep one of the older S4's upstairs (where I don't need a ton of bandwidth right now). The connectivity to my studio was GREATLY improved. I could get 5Ghz Wifi6 and speedtest.net was showing me 30+Mbps, which was way faster - or at least fast enough I could actually use it if I wanted to. Sure it's not as fast as in the house (more on that later) but it was at least functional now and that will probably make clients a little happier (and I'm not using the wifi on my studio system while we are recording so I don't care how much bandwidth they suck up).
Back in the house (close to the main router) I'm seeing 300-1000 Mbps download and 30-40Mbps upload (which is way better than I've had - this is Spectrum gig cable - I hate Spectrum but the Google Fiber is still being connected in my neighborhood. Also, they gave me a decent price break when I told them I was going to switch to Google lol). I also just put a new Wifi WLAN card in my laptop today (Intel AX210 for $18 on Amazon) so it can take advantage of the 802.11ax (aka Wifi6) speeds.
The only casualty was my Sonos music system. I have been pretty unhappy with it lately anyway (the app developers completely ruined the usability recently), but it would no longer connect. I had 5 speakers (2 pair and 1 single) so after futzing with it for an hour or two, I just reset them and sold them (and sold them all in one day) and I got 67% of what I paid for them (several years ago) so I feel pretty good about that. it's enough to buy a few more Alexa dots or whatever in the next couple weeks - cause you know they are going to be on sale. And I'll be selling (or donating) my old S4's (at least the pair I'm not using). Anyway, a couple busy days but mostly a success!
