I got to check one off my bucket list and booked a session in Studio B at Electrical Audio last week. I was playing drums and recording with help from my dear friend, Shane (of Howl Street Recording in Milwaukee), and we had the wonderful Greg Norman for our first day (well worth the extra $$ to have him instead of other staff engineers - he's a super knowledgeable and nice guy!). we spent the bulk of our first day shooting the shit, shooting out different snares (I brought 4) and mics. Man, what a special place!? I can't imagine many better places to track drums for mid tempo loud rock stuff. But that room was incredible! The gear was phenomenal (and everything worked!!!). I def went a bit overboard, I had half-jokingly stated I was aiming to use $75k in mics on the drums alone. I think I ended up around $65k, so I suggested we use the U48 as a front of kit mic, but Greg told me that would be cheating. Sadly, it'll prob be a while til i can share the recordings at all, but I honestly can't wait til that day comes. here was my mic list: kick in - m380 kick out - U195 kick batter - Crown GLM100 snare top - 175A snare top2 - m201 snare bot - 441 rack top - e22 rack bot - e22 floor top - e22 floor bot - e22 OH - C24 (xy) OH2 - SM2 (xy) OH3 - 4038 (spaced pair) ride - c42 room - CMV563 pair with N55k caps room2 - 4038 pair facing straight up here's some pics and i think a short video (hoping this works, trying to save some bandwidth for the board)

Thanks for sharing! I need to put “record songs with other engineers” on my list. Love those Jenkins Martin drums!

Thanks for sharing! I need to put “record songs with other engineers” on my list. Love those Jenkins Martin drums! Those Jenkins Martin kits are amazing. I have one and text Scott every six months to see if they’re taking orders again. Also def stoked I lugged my 24lbs bell bronze snare on the plane for this! It beat two keplingers!

That's fantastic. Greg Norman is awesome on MANY levels. I've been to Electrical, but never had the chance to work there.

Amazing!
Question - did you have a chance to listen to the raw tracks? I wanted to know how you felt about the sound of the U195 on the outer kick. I've been curious about how it sounds on the kick.

I think I might try the ribbons pointing up room deal this weekend. Up and down (fig 8). Basically nulls the direct from the drums and grabs the diffuse reflections. Great if you like your room!

i hope to track there one day. i've mixed some tracks from electrical B and while the engineering wasn't great (i don't know who the engineer was - got the tracks years after they were recorded from the band. wasn't steve or greg.), the room sound was undeniably amazing. the place is iconic for a reason!

What's weird is the total lack of vibe. It's just a feng sui mess, lol. Those red walls have my anxiety up and I'm just looking at pictures.
People spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on sound control and here this place is, nothing but exposed blocks and hard surfaces.
If it works, it works I guess.

There's actually more going on there, acoustically, than what might seem apparent at first glance. I read about it years ago, and there was a good deal of thought put into acoustics. I'm with you on the red walls though. I would have gone with different colors, but to each their own.

Those red walls have my anxiety up and I'm just looking at pictures. People are funny about color of walls in studios. You can’t win! Last studio I had, I had red walls with whitish soffits and whitish traps in the control room and most people didn’t comment about the paint color. I expanded and completely remodeled the control room some years later with natural, neutral tones and no one really commented there either. The studio side was huge with 14ft ceilings and with natural and neutral, light tones the entire time. The whole time, it seemed damn-near everyone commented: “You should paint at least one wall in here for some color. I think red would be nice.” It went to a record-label next, gear and all. What’s the first thing they did? Painted damn-near every wall red!

Very punk rock, it was Steve's workshop. That's how he saw it. Those red walls have my anxiety up and I'm just looking at pictures. People are funny about color of walls in studios. You can’t win! I have lights blues and in the live room, a darker green in the control room, with a lighter green ceiling. I redid the booth a couple years ago and didthe window wall with green crushed velvet and the other walls in purple crushed velvet.

Yeah while Steve & Co, are definitely a bit more scientific in their approach than the the guys at Smart were the punk DIY basics always shined through. I think Steve found it absolutely hilarious how Styoks design completely changed the sound of Smart from what everyone had been accustomed to so much so that Changing Electricical was completely off limits.

My favorite spaces have natural light. One room I book does have red walls, can’t say I’ve ever had a bad experience there.

On Color Psychology, this website says:"Red: love, passion, anger Red is one of the most intense, stimulating colors that raises a room’s energy. Muted shades can pique feelings of love, passion, and sensuality, while bright hues may trigger anger, strength, and power. It’s a warm, generally positive, motivating color that encourages people to act and gives shy, soft-spoken folks more confidence. A little red goes a long way—just an accent wall or a few items of decor are enough to invigorate you. Physical effects: Faster and more powerful reactions, higher blood pressure and heart rate, faster respiration Best in: Dining rooms, living rooms, entryways, kitchens, rooms for entertainment Worst in: Bedrooms, rooms where you want to relax"

Oh yeah! Been listening to raw files since I got home! It does a great job on kick reso - I used to use it there often. I do normally use my Lawson 47 FET there at home but opted for the U195 when I looked at their mic list. After I had it up Greg mentioned they had a reissue FET47 but I didn’t feel like switching it

One room I book does have red walls, can’t say I’ve ever had a bad experience there. I feel like such an oddball, but natural light is about the last thing I want in my studio this side of smoke. Nah. All digital. Tape would have been fun but I knew that would add so much time. I did a million takes for each project. Of course now I’m parsing through like 8 hours of takes but it meant less running up and down those stairs for me.
