You know my recent tracking experience with the BLA Bluey has made me realise, the value of reading about gear online or
listening to other peoples opinions (which are often polarized or occasionally have a hidden vested interest) whilst fun and engaging on a social
level - is really of very limited value.
You gotta get the gear in your room and use it!
I know that's blinking obvious, but I do wonder sometimes how many times people are put off something that might be great for them
because it got dissed on a forum or isn't this weeks fashion.
For example .... and yes it sounds dumb as I type it.
I had dismissed using my new BLA Bluey as tracking compressor because I had read and also made a presumption it's a "mix compressor"!
Even the rep for BLA was on this forums saying "well it's really set up for line signal from a desk" .... and ideally needs a pad inline with the input
and I took that as confirming "yep it's a mix comp" .... yeah I know I'm an idiot.
Also the whole Blue stripe thing and people saying it's so edgy and almost tube like.
Anyway, recently I patched it in after a BAE 1073D (which has an output know for knocking down the line out)
And started singing and .... WTF ....
Set at 4:1 in the equivalent of the Doc Pepper setting (the controls work differently on the Bluey)
the vocal sound was smooth as silk - not a hint of Blue Stripe distortion - I was really blown away - it sounded flipping gorgeous to my ears with my voice.
And yes, it can be set to sound very edgy of course but I never suspected it would do smooth ... after all it's FET comp!
Half the negative comments I've read about the Bluey, I now suspect might be from people who probably haven't been within a country mile of one (I know that happens a lot on pro audio forums)
So from now on - I'm going to make the effort and organise getting gear into the studio when I'm interested in a piece because there has been many occasions
over the years where I've allowed myself to be influenced by people opinions and passed on getting a demo (and maybe they haven't even tried the unit in question?!?)
By the way, I highly recommend the BLA Bluey .... I think it's my new favourite vocal tracking compressor
Well actually, you better take that with a pinch of salt
