We're moving our TV out of the living room and into the game room. This means that I need a different way to get streaming music into the living room speakers for casual listening (these are the Shinola badged speakers from Barefoot that came out a few years back, sound nice).
The previous method was to connect a 1/8" to RCA into the back of the speakers fed from the Smart TV. I'd like to not have to tether a phone to the speakers so I'm looking for a DAC with wireless capability.
MUST HAVE - Either WiFi or Bluetooth connectivity, small enough to sit on top of the Shinolas or (more ideally) be velcro'd to the back, decent conversion. This is not my hifi room, I have another setup for that. This is podcasts and Taylor Swift and classical music in the background type stuff. Family stuff.
MUST NOT HAVE - Any type of microphone. We have enough eavesdropping devices in our house, thank you very much.
Budget? I don't know. $300 maybe? But if $50 would get me something that would feel sonically invisible that's great too.

not a DAC, but I bought into the Sonos stuff several years ago (sale at Costco) and just use it for streaming stuff. My wife loves (loved) it and we are lazy and mostly listen to Pandora or Amazon or Sirius XM... but if I was looking at Sonos today my future self would warn me not to buy Sonos because they are a HOT MESS. They changed the app a few months ago and totally fucked up a good thing and made it a complete shit show. They keep trying to "fix" it and sometimes it won't work at all, and other times it just does weird flakey stuff. The CEO has publicly apologized (but fuck that guy...). They don't really care, whatever. I was going to buy one for my garage and instead bought an Amazon echo dot. I hate that it is always listening, but fuck it, Bezos can listen to my garage for the 23.9 hours a day that nobody is in there... but I do talk to Alexa nicely just in case the revolt is near...
edit: a few days after writing this reply I updated my home wifi (to a Deco X5700 mesh) and now all the Sonos stuff refuses to work (even if wired). I had the Deco S4 prior and it did work... Anyway, that was the last straw. I reset it all (which I had to do when troubleshooting it all anyway), packed it up and sold it on FB marketplace and I'll buy something else. I got my money's worth over the years I had it.

There are endless options for this on amazon that will work just fine. i bought something thats a 2.1 ch amp/dac for like 100 bucks a few years ago for the garage stereo. Works great. Has bluetooth for direct phone connection plus ADAT for digital out from TV and few other options. Just browser amazon and pick one you like. it won't suck. Not going to blow you away either but will do the job.

Yeah, this is kind of what I was hoping to hear. Honestly, the insane number of options is kind of overwhelming... "probably doesn't matter" is music to my ears.
And yeah, I have a Sonos device on my porch. I thought it was just me but the app is really messed up. Always good to be polite to the robots though, you never know.
