My acoustic string journey has gone something like this:
whatever is on it -> John Pearse 600L -> Martin Retro -> JP 600L (again) -> Martin Lifespan 2.0 -> Martin Luxe
Martin lifespans were great on my D-35 (no longer have) but on my Yamaha AC1R, I found the guitar unbalanced - I blamed it on the guitar mostly.
At $20 a pack, these are not a cheap date, but I decided to give them a shot - I really like them, very well balanced on the Yamaha. First day they were a bit uncontrolled as tuning settled in, but then they went on plane (as in a boat going on plane) - well balanced and fairly loud. More top-end than the Lifespans which is something I was going for on the Yammy, as I felt it just a touch dark.
I'd say the Martin Retros (which I believe are Monel's) have the most low end and made the D-35 a thunder cannon. The JPs were a touch less so and the Lifespans even less, but just right for the D-35. The Luxe's are a tighter low-end than the Lifespans and I like them for recording.
As long as they last like Martin suggests they should, I'm ok paying the $20.
