I'm a huge fan of DT, their diverse songwriting and musical ability are to me unmatched, but that's just me

I LOVE Dream Theatre, John Petrucci is one of my favorite guitarists, along with Hendrix, Winter, Steve Morse, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Vinnie Moore, Greg Howe, and some others. I have a heavily-modified Ernie Ball JPX, to which I added a Sustainiac, a midi output, and a Tremel-no. The neck on the JPX is by far the most comfortable I've ever tried.

I had a front row seat at a Vinnie Moore clinic shortly after Minds Eye came out in the mid 80's. Everyone you mentioned are great, sadly I've only seen Dream Theater live once, and G3 a couple times, Petrucci, Satriani, Gilgert being one of them. Do you prefer them with Mangini or Portnoy?

I'm not much of a concert goer. I'm one of those weird guys that prefer studio sound to live sound. The last concert I was at was Joe Satriani at Massey Hall in Toronto in the early 90's. It was very disappointing! At least where I was sitting, Joe's guitar could only be heard when he played solo. Otherwise the bass, drums, and especially keyboards completely drowned him out. Massey Hall normally had great acoustics, it was the home of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and I played violin there a few times when I was a kid. I saw Johnny Winter there, and the sound was amazing. But for that concert I had front-row seats on Winter's side of the stage, so I was 10 feet away from Winter all night and had the same musical perspective as he would have heard.
My favorite Dream Theatre album is Images and Words, so I guess that makes me a Portnoy guy.

At the Boston Orpheum Satriani's guitar was loud as f__k! As far as Dream Theater Petrucci and Portnoy were really loud and I couldn't hear the bass and keys too well. My favorite is Dramatic turn of events, followed by Systematic Chaos, which is the tour i saw.
